Ms. Hayes is a prominent patent attorney specializing in chemical and pharmaceutical patent prosecution, preparation, and opinion work. As a principal of Jordan Intellectual Property Law LLC, she has been instrumental in managing a comprehensive portfolio of patent cases since 2019. Her responsibilities include creating new patent applications, consulting clients on their needs and responding to communications from various international patent offices. With 30 years of experience in her profession, Ms. Hayes has established herself as an expert in chemical and pharmaceutical patent prosecution, preparation, and opinion work.
Jordan IP Law is based in Washington, D.C., and specializes exclusively in providing strategic guidance, counseling and portfolio management in areas relating to patent and trademark law. Before joining her firm, Ms. Hayes was a partner at Sughrue Mion, PLLC from 2009 to 2019. During this decade-long tenure, she honed her skills in intellectual property (IP) law and built a reputation for excellence in her field. Before becoming a partner, Ms. Hayes was an associate at the Sughrue Mion, PLLC between 2001 and 2008, where she gained invaluable experience that laid the groundwork for her future success.
Ms. Hayes began her career at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as a patent examiner from 1997 to 1999 and then as a petitions' attorney until 2001. These roles gave her a deep understanding of the intricacies of patent law and the regulatory environment, which has been crucial to her later achievements.
In preparation for her career, Ms. Hayes obtained a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from Howard University in 1991, a Master of Laws in intellectual property from The George Washington University in 2002, a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Howard University in 1994 and a Master of Science in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Florida in 2021. This robust educational foundation has been pivotal to her success, allowing her to navigate the complex intersection of science and law.
In addition to her professional achievements, Ms. Hayes is actively involved in several industry-related organizations, including the National Bar Association, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, and the American Chemical Society. Outside of her career, she is deeply committed to civic engagement. In memory of her late husband, who was tragically murdered in 2011, Ms. Hayes and her three children established a nonprofit organization that offers scholarships to children who have lost their parents. Last year in 2023, they awarded $10,000 to four students on the inaugural day of scholarship disbursements. This year in 2024, they awarded $13,000.00 to 13 students to assist students who have lost their parents with education related expenses.
Recognizing her hard work, Ms. Hayes received the Saginaw STEM scholarship through the Golden Women Foundation. She attributes all of her accomplishments to the strong foundation provided by her parents, who ensured that she and her siblings received a good education and remained disciplined and committed to their goals. Inspired by her mother, a lawyer, and her father, a pharmacist, Ms. Hayes pursued pharmacy education before enrolling in law school.
Ms. Hayes is focusing on completing a doctoral degree in pharmaceutical sciences and expanding her nonprofit's reach to support students with incarcerated parents or those residing in nursing homes. She also aims to continue serving her clientele while advocating for diversity within the field.
