In addition to his directorship role at Public Lands Media, Mr. Wuerthner has been the ecological projects director for the Foundation for Deep Ecology in Sausalito, California, since 2004. He oversees various ecological initiatives to preserve natural habitats and promote environmental sustainability. Mr. Wuerthner succeeded as a freelance writer and photographer between 1985 and 2004. Earlier in his career, he was a river ranger and biologist for the Bureau of Land Management in Tok, Alaska, in 1982 and a backcountry ranger for the National Park Service in 1981.
Adding to his credentials, Mr. Wuerthner has served as an adjunct lecturer in environmental politics at his alma mater, the University of California Santa Cruz, as well as the University of Vermont, Prescott College, and several other universities.
Mr. Wuerthner's academic background includes a bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Montana and a Master of Science in communication from the University of California Santa Cruz in 1985. He later attended grad school in geography for several years of study at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Besides his education, he has been active as a member of several industry-related organizations, including the Wildlife Society, the Society for Environmental Journalism, and the Association for Fire Ecology. Mr. Wuerthner also serves as the board president for RESTORE: The North Woods, The New National Parks Campaign, Montana Wild Bison Restoration Council, and Sage Steppe Wild. He previously held board positions with Wildlands Project, Western Watersheds Project, Park County Environmental Council, and Montana Wilderness Association, among others.
Mr. Wuerthner is a strong advocate for environmental causes. He has authored over 35 books on various topics related to nature and conservation.
