Prior to her current position, Dr. Handon was the director of consumer advocacy for the State of Ohio from 2015 to 2020. For the preceding five years, she served as the lead consultant for the National Resource Center for Adoption. Beyond her career in policy, she has worked as an adjunct faculty member and lecturer at several institutions, including Indiana Wesleyan University, Northern Arizona University, Post University and The Ohio State University's College of Social Work.
Before assuming these roles, Dr. Handon was the bureau chief for the Office of Families and Children at the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services from 2005 to 2009. She began her career by serving as a child welfare casework supervisor II at Franklin County Children Services from 1979 to 2005.
Dr. Handon's academic achievements include a doctorate in public policy and administration from Walden University, a Master of Science in administration with a focus on public policy from Central Michigan University and a Bachelor of Arts in social work from Capital University. Furthering her expertise, she holds certifications as an Ohio Secretary of State-commissioned notary and as a licensed social worker through the Ohio Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. She has also completed LeanOhio Training through the Ohio Department of Administrative Services.
Dr. Handon is actively involved in several industry-related organizations, such as the American Association of University Women, the Human Services Levy Review Committee for the Franklin County Board of Commissioners, the International City County Management Association, Leadership Columbus Alumni and the Ohio Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Additionally, she has been involved with the National Organization of Blacks in Law Enforcement and the Seal of Ohio Girl Scouts.
In addition to her professional endeavors, Dr. Handon has been deeply involved in civic activities. She has been the director of Women's Ministry at Rehoboth Temple Church since 2000 and has served on the Levy Review Committee for the Franklin County Board of Commissioners since 2019. She has also been recently associated with the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, and she has been certified as a spinal cord injury volunteer with the Ohio State Hospital.
Dr. Handon has received numerous awards throughout her career in recognition of her work. She was granted the Field Instructor of the Year from The Ohio State University College of Social Work, the Friend of a Child Award from S.A.F.Y. and the Outstanding Mentor of the Year from Mentoring Center of Central Ohio, among many others.
Dr. Handon is also very proud of her publications, which include "An Ethnographic Study of Client-Initiated Violence Affecting Child Protection Workers," published by ProQuest, and "Client Relationships and Ethical Boundaries in Child Welfare," published in The New Social Worker Magazine. Reflecting on her career, she attributes much of her success to her exceptional professionalism and adept networking skills.
After surviving two strokes, Dr. Handon is dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities. After surviving a stroke herself, she joined The Ohio State University Disability Team as a peer coach to help others navigate their lives after a stroke. She aims to engage with disabled professionals globally to share her achievements and inspire others.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Handon foresees continuous growth and development for her company over the next several years. She is committed to raising awareness about the struggles and potential of the disabled population and sees this as an opportunity to expand her business in new directions while making a significant difference in this underrepresented community.
