Lending her expertise to academia as well, Ms. Allen has thrived as an adjunct professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Maryville University since 2024 and a guest lecturer in the Physical Therapy Assistant Program at Jefferson College since 2019. She formerly served as a guest lecturer at numerous other institutions, such as the Northwestern University Prosthetics-Orthotics Center in Chicago, the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at the St. Louis College of Health Careers, Maryville University, and Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Allen excelled in a myriad of physical therapy-related positions of increasing prominence. Prior to assuming her current role, she served as a PRN physical therapist at St. Luke's Rehabilitation Hospital, PAM Health, in Chesterfield, Missouri, from 2022 to 2024. Notably, she previously served as a center manager and clinic prosthetist at NovaCare Prosthetics & Orthotics with NovaCare Rehabilitation from 2018 to 2022, a rehabilitation director and program manager at Eclipse Home Health, HealthPRO Heritage, from 2017 to 2018, and a PRN physical therapist at SSM Health Rehabilitation Hospital from 2010 to 2017, where she previously served as a center manager and outpatient physical therapist from 2008 to 2010.
Likewise, Ms. Allen served as a practice manager and the lead clinic prosthetist at the Hanger Clinic in St. Louis from 2014 to 2016, having earlier lent her knowledge to the clinic as a staff prosthetist between 2011 and 2013. She also worked as a staff physical therapist at Elliot Rehabilitation Services at the Wellness Center of Elliot Hospital in Manchester, New Hampshire, from 2006 to 2008. Furthermore, Ms. Allen was a staff physical therapist at such institutions as St. Joseph's Hospital, the Outpatient Neurological Rehabilitation Department of St. John's Mercy Sports and Therapy, and St. Mary's Health Center between 2002 and 2006 following the receipt of her master's degree.
Highly educated, Ms. Allen first attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 1998, a Bachelor of Science in health sciences in 2001, and a Master of Physical Therapy in 2002. Moreover, she is a licensed physical therapist, an ABC-certified prosthetist, and a certified prosthetist through the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. Outside of her clinical appointments, she has contributed to the O&P Edge Magazine several times. In her spare time, Shamel enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, Liam, and Olivia.
In accounting for her success, Ms. Allen credits her unwavering commitment to providing the best possible care for her patients. In this regard, she has always understood the significance of rehabilitation for individuals recovering from such conditions as strokes, brain surgery, amputations or joint replacements. As such, Ms. Allen seeks to treat her patients as if they were members of her own family, a principle she likewise instills in her students. Above all, she emphasizes the importance of family support, as well as the value of collaboration with team members. Looking toward the future, Ms. Allen aims to achieve a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree to expand the scope of her expertise while concurrently dedicating more time to teaching.
