Ms. Blackburn, an advanced practice registered nurse and board-certified psychiatric mental health clinical nurse specialist, has dedicated 45 years to her profession. Since 2011, she has been a faculty member and board president at the Bowen Theory Education Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she has served for over a decade. In her role, Ms. Blackburn revises the entire course curriculum, supports an associate faculty member who previously served as the administrator and collaborates on course revisions.
Ms. Blackburn joined the nonprofit organization shortly after it was established in 2008. The Bowen Theory Education Center provides education and training for the Bowen Theory of natural systems and their application to the human condition. Leveraging her extensive expertise, Ms. Blackburn owned Family Systems Therapy from 1978 to 2023 and taught college-level education at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, between 1981 and 2014.
Having begun her career as a graduate nurse at Pardee Hospital in 1961, Ms. Blackburn became a nurse faculty member at Erlanger Medical Center from 1963 to 1965. Her journey continued at Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute, where she held several positions, including director of nursing education, director of nursing, psychiatric mental health clinical specialist and director of standards and compliance between 1965 and 1981.
In preparation for her career in health care, Ms. Blackburn received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, in 1961 and a Master of Science in nursing from Vanderbilt University in 1974. She also received qualifications as a registered nurse and is certified as a psychiatric mental health clinical nurse specialist by the American Nurses Association. Ms. Blackburn's curiosity, quest for knowledge and altruistic inclination to aid individuals have significantly contributed to her success.
Throughout her career, Ms. Blackburn has been an active member of several industry-related organizations, including the American Nurses Association and the Psychiatric Nurses Association. In addition to her professional achievements, she has been involved in civic-minded organizations and church activities.
Ms. Blackburn's expertise in family systems therapy has profoundly impacted over 4,000 families in the Chattanooga area and neighboring regions in Alabama and Georgia. Recognizing her success, she received an Award for Nursing Excellence in Advanced Practice Nursing from the Tennessee Nurses Association in 2012. Eager for the future of the Bowen Theory Center, Ms. Blackburn aims to ensure its continued success and expansion. Her objective is to establish it as a well-respected program that aids individuals in acquiring knowledge about their families and improving their familial relationships, thereby transforming their interpersonal dynamics.
