Drawing on 43 years of experience in his field, Dr. Heimlich is distinguished as the senior director of research at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) Center for Research and Evaluation since 2018. In this role, he has been instrumental in establishing the social science laboratory at the center, collaborating with various research teams within the museum, and contributing to federally funded projects both domestically and internationally. His work primarily focuses on studying how people learn in school settings.

Prior to his current title, Dr. Heimlich was a senior researcher and Co-Director of the Lifelong Learning Group, now the Center for Research and Evaluation, from 2012 to 2021. His extensive career also includes a 33-year tenure as professor (now emeritus) at The Ohio State University, where he played a significant role in waste management policy and education and global environmental education. Additionally, he was a senior research associate at the Institute for Learning Innovation from 2003 to 2011.

Dr. Heimlich's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in communication arts, theatre and dance from Capital University in 1979. He went on to earn a Master of Arts in public policy education from The Ohio State University in 1989 and completed his Doctor of Philosophy in educational psychology at the same institution in 1990. His academic achievements have been pivotal in shaping his career, providing him with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in his various roles.

Throughout his career, Dr. Heimlich has been actively involved in numerous industry-related organizations. He is or has been a proud member of the North American Association for Environmental Education, the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, the Association of Science and Technology Centers, the Visitor Studies Association, the National Association for Interpretation, the American Evaluation Association and the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education. These affiliations have allowed him to stay connected with advancements in his field and contribute to the broader community.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Heimlich has held many local, state, national, and international leadership positions within civic-minded and educational organizations. He has served as chair of the board of directors for Available Light Theatre since 2016 and president of the Visitor Studies Association, 2007-2010. He has also served as blog coordinator and program co-chair for LGBT and Arts & Culture Topical Interest Groups within the American Evaluation Association in the late 90s and early 2000s. His longstanding involvement with the North American Association for Environmental Education has included several leadership roles including past president.

Dr. Heimlich's contributions to environmental education have been recognized with awards such as the 2013 Walter E. Jeske Award from the North American Association for Environmental Education. He has also co-authored "Developing Teaching Style in Adult Education," published by Jossey-Bass in 1994, and served as editor for books and collections such as "Zoos and Aquariums in the Public Mind" from Springer among many others.

Dr. Heimlich attributes much of his success to the unwavering support of his dedicated parents, both of whom were educators committed to providing cultural and social experiences for their children despite living in a rural Ohio town. This foundation has been instrumental in shaping his career and personal life, allowing him to pursue his passions and make significant contributions to his field.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Heimlich enjoys spending time with friends and family and appreciating the arts. He is married to Dr. James Hodnett and values their shared experiences and support. Looking ahead, Dr. Heimlich is exploring end-of-career projects in collaboration with his colleagues.
