He went on to earn a Master of Arts in public policy education from The Ohio State University in 1989 and completed his Doctor of Philosophy in educational psychology at the same institution in 1990. Throughout his career, Dr. Heimlich has been actively involved in numerous industry-related organizations. He is or has been a proud member of the North American Association for Environmental Education, the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, the Association of Science and Technology Centers, the Visitor Studies Association, the National Association for Interpretation, the American Evaluation Association and the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Heimlich has held many local, state, national, and international leadership positions within civic-minded and educational organizations. He has served as chair of the board of directors for Available Light Theatre since 2016 and president of the Visitor Studies Association, 2007-2010. He has also served as blog coordinator and program co-chair for LGBT and Arts & Culture Topical Interest Groups within the American Evaluation Association in the late 90s and early 2000s. His longstanding involvement with the North American Association for Environmental Education has included several leadership roles including past president.
Dr. Heimlich's contributions to environmental education have been recognized with awards such as the 2013 Walter E. Jeske Award from the North American Association for Environmental Education. He has also co-authored "Developing Teaching Style in Adult Education," published by Jossey-Bass in 1994, and served as editor for books and collections such as "Zoos and Aquariums in the Public Mind" from Springer among many others.
