HOUSTON, TX, October 08, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gerald Lawson Gill, professor emeritus of James Madison University, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the Norfolk/Richmond, Virginia regional edition of Bloomberg Businessweek.
Gerald Lawson Gill joined the faculty of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in 1974 and served with the prestigious academic institution for 36 fruitful years. Earning the title of professor emeritus in 2010, he previously served as a full professor for eight years. Earlier in his career, Mr. Gill was an associate professor, an assistant professor and an instructor. Likewise, he lent his considerable expertise to librarianship, having served James Madison University as a catalog librarian, a reference librarian, a law librarian, a business reference librarian, a government documents librarian, and the head of reference and government documents between 1974 and 2003.
Although he has experienced a myriad of career achievements, Mr. Gill is particularly proud of establishing the business section of the American Library Association, which enrolled approximately 800 business librarians. To this end, he notes that the business section helped librarians reach students, community members and entrepreneurs and served as a valuable resource for their communities at large.
Parallel to his career in education, Mr. Gill served as a member of the editorial board of the James Madison Journal for three years and a reviewer for the American Reference Books Annual. He has also contributed numerous articles to esteemed publications and professional journals. To remain abreast of developments in his field, Mr. Gill is a former treasurer and president of the Virginia chapter of the Special Libraries Association, a former chairperson of the business reference services committee of the American Library Association and a parliamentarian of the Virginia Librarian Association.
To commemorate his achievements, Mr. Gill has received several accolades. He has been honored with the Gale Research Award for Excellence in Business Librarianship from the American Library Association in 1991. He cites his receipt of the award as one of the highlights of his career, emphasizing that the accolade recognized his prowess in lecturing and organizing.
In the coming years, Mr. Gill aims to continue enjoying his retirement. In his leisure time, he takes part in writing, reading and collecting artwork.
Mr. Gill graduated from Roosevelt High School in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1967. From there, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in history, philosophy and religion from the University of Georgia in 1971 and a Master of Arts in library science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1973. After accruing some years in his area of expertise, Mr. Gill completed postgraduate coursework in business administration at James Madison University from 1978 to 1979. He is a certified professional librarian in the state of Virginia.
