Leveraging more than two decades of professional excellence in occupational medicine, Dr. Shilpa N. Gowda has utilized her experience to treat various illnesses and injuries and monitor employees who work in hazardous conditions or with dangerous materials to ensure that they maintain peak physical performance. During her tenure with the United States Department of Defense, she focused her efforts on conducting comprehensive medical examinations on individuals looking for careers in public service, such as firefighters and police officers, to effectively determine their mental and physical capabilities to perform their duties.
Notably, Dr. Gowda was inspired to enter her profession by her mother, who served as an internist for 20 fruitful years. Often visiting her mother at work, Dr. Gowda sought to follow in her footsteps. Although she initially gravitated toward a career in molecular biology as a student, she decided to hone her career in occupational medicine, emphasizing its humanitarian nature, which would allow her access to help individuals on a grand scale.
Earlier in her career, Dr. Gowda served with the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine as a medical consultant and has since served with the organization as a media representative for its environmental health section and a task force member of its anti-racism workgroup since 2022. Additionally, she has worked on the organization's American occupational health conference planning committee since 2021. Likewise, Dr. Gowda served as the director of occupational employee health at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System in New Orleans and an attending physician at Maine General Medical Center, where she co-founded and co-directed the Spirometry Training Program through the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Impressively, among many other appointments, Dr. Gowda worked on the Boeing Firefighter Occupational Health Exam Program through the department of medicine at the University of Washington and has contributed her wealth of knowledge to scholarly articles in such publications as Environmental Epidemiology.
Dr. Gowda is currently exploring a number of professional opportunities to apply her knowledge and experience to diverse roles in the health care arena and intends to continue contributing in a meaningful way to the wellness of others.

Furthermore, she was recently selected for inclusion in the second edition of IAOTP's "Top 50 Fearless Leaders" and on the cover of TIP Magazine in 2024, serving as a testament to her longevity and success in the field.
