BELVEDERE TIBURON, CA, October 09, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ellen Jane Killebrew, MD, cardiologist and educator with Kaiser Permanente and the University of California San Francisco, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the San Francisco regional edition of Vanity Fair magazine.
Dr. Ellen Jane Killebrew is well-regarded in medicine for her expertise in cardiology and higher education. Since 1992, she has thrived as a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California San Francisco, having also served on the admissions panel of the University of California Berkeley's Joint Medical Program from 1998 to 2016. Serving at Kaiser Permanente as a noninvasive cardiologist since 1970, she joined the university medical center clinical faculty in 1973 as an assistant turned associate professor. At the inception of her career, she was the director of coronary care at the Permanente Medical Group and taught a coronary care course at Contra Costa College between 1973 and 1976.
Drawing upon more than 50 years of experience, Dr. Killebrew was first inspired to enter the field of health care after overcoming a severe case of gastroenteritis when she was 13 years old. Influenced by the physician who treated her, she sought to give back by becoming a doctor herself, treating individuals with medical conditions and improving their lives. Reflecting upon her five-decade-long career, Dr. Killebrew recently authored a memoir, "The Magic Bag: Adventures of a Pioneer Female Cardiologist," illuminating her longstanding career in medicine and academia, as well as directing attention to the remarkable transformations in medicine and women's place in medicine since the 1960s.
Dr. Killebrew emphasizes in "The Magic Bag" that women accounted for only 7% of medical school graduates during the 1960s, steering the industry toward a male-dominated space where women were often not recruited for job positions. During that time, cardiac patients were treated for their underlying symptoms and prescribed bed rest instead of discovering the root of the condition. In modern times, these treatment modalities have advanced significantly, helping doctors such as Dr. Killebrew pivot patients' lives toward healthier lifestyles. In this regard, Dr. Killebrew has spent her career helping women receive equitable medical care and mentoring female physicians.
Dr. Killebrew is proud to have improved the lives of countless patients during her career. She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Killebrew earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Bucknell University in 1959 and completed a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1965. Impressively, she was one of only four women in her graduating class at medical school. She completed an internship and residency at the University of Colorado and a fellowship in cardiology at the Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. Dr. Killebrew is board-certified in cardiovascular medicine and internal medicine.
Dr. Killebrew was honored for Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Faculty at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine in 2014. She also earned a Certificate of Congressional Recognition from the Permanente Medical Group in 2010, a Commendation for contributing to women and heart disease from the State Assembly of California in 2005, and the Lowell Beal Award from the House Staff Association in 1992.
