Now retired, Mr. Smith remains abreast of changes in the field via his affiliation with the International Planetarium Society. Similarly, he volunteers as a planetarium educator at the eponymous Smith Planetarium, which serves schools from two counties in Alabama, four in Georgia, and two in Tennessee, alongside his wife. He also contributes to his community through First Baptist Church in Chattanooga. Over the years, Mr. Smith has aligned himself with the Southeastern Planetarium Association, the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and the Walker County Association of Retired Educators.
Throughout his illustrious career, Mr. Smith has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, a testament to his significant contributions. His accolades include a National Science Foundation Grant in 1978, a fellowship through the Royal Astronomical Society in 1980, and the prestigious Walker County Citizen of the Year Award through the Walker County Chamber of Commerce in 2014.
