ALBUQUERQUE, NM, October 10, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Joseph G. R. Martinez, retired regents' professor of the University of New Mexico, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the New Mexico regional edition of GQ magazine.

Dr. Joseph G. R. Martinez has maintained a love for mathematics since a formative age. As a young child, he witnessed his brother being bullied by his teacher and fellow students due to his difficulty with mathematics. Desiring to make a profound difference in the way mathematics is taught and understood, Dr. Martinez sought to become an educator. By the fourth grade, he taught himself how to complete algebraic equations and teach his methods to others, serving as a testament to his intrinsic understanding of mathematical processes. Now retired, Dr. Martinez taught at his alma mater from 1973 to the spring of 2012 – one semester shy of 40 years – retiring as a professor of mathematics education in the mathematics, science and technology education program and serving earlier as an associate professor of mathematics, science and education in psychological foundations programs from 1992 to 2012.

Joining the faculty of the University of New Mexico as a teaching assistant in 1974, Dr. Martinez ascended the ranks, achieving status as lecturer, assistant professor and full professor. Over the course of his career, he also taught in the department of mathematics at the University of Albuquerque, rising to such roles as assistant professor and department chairperson. While serving at the University of New Mexico, he also taught research statistics and statistical analysis at the graduate level and developed a graduate course in research design.

Prior to commencing his vocational path, Dr. Martinez pursued a formal education at the University of New Mexico, receiving a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1973. After amassing many years in his field, he returned to higher education at his alma mater, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1980. Dr. Martinez focused his doctoral dissertation on the concept of iconic read-out, which earned him a nomination for the prestigious Popejoy Dissertation Prize. In addition, Dr. Martinez is a former Marine, having served honorably with the United States Marine Corps between 1964 and 1968.

Having penned several books and articles since the inception of his professional career, Dr. Martinez credits the influence of his late wife, Dr. Nancy Martinez, as a factor leading to his success. He also attributes much of his success to his religious faith. Looking forward, he aims to continue publishing works within his areas of expertise.

Dr. Martinez has authored and co-authored numerous works throughout his career, continuing his writing of "The Narrow Way" series — a multiple-volume theological-psychological-philosophical work. He also co-authored "Creating Authentic Learning Environments for College-Level Courses in Writing and Teaching Mathematics" and "Universal Design for Learning as a Model for Teaching Mathematics" in 2011, among other works. In 1996, Dr. Martinez, alongside his wife Nancy, wrote the book "Math Without Fear: A Guide for Preventing Math Anxiety in Children," detailing the culprits that deprive students of learning mathematics: fear and anxiety.

Dr. Martinez accepted the Regents' Professor Award and 71 other awards and honors, beginning with Phi Beta Kappa and a BS with distinction in 1973. He earned a plethora of Merit Awards from the University of New Mexico College of Education between 1997 and 2011, which also nominated him for Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 2010. He was honored with a Certificate of Recognition from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in 1998.
