Mr. Do Val is a senior CO2 measurement and pipeline engineer at Tallgrass Energy, a leading energy infrastructure company based in Lakewood, Colorado, where he has been instrumental for over 20 years. His expertise in hydrocarbon and CO2 flow measurement has been marked by significant contributions to the design, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of oil, gas, and CO2 metering systems.
In his current role at Tallgrass Energy since 2024, Mr. Do Val's work encompasses upstream production facilities, gas processing plants, refineries, bulk plants, terminals and pipelines. He leads a unique CO2 capture, transportation and storage project, designs metering systems for CO2 capture from ethanol plants and implements new technologies on a large scale. Mr. Do Val's responsibilities also include designing blowdown systems for supercritical CO2, sizing control valves for supercritical CO2 and developing methodologies to estimate losses through small orifices in pipelines operating with supercritical CO2.
Recruited from Kinder Morgan Inc. in Houston, Mr. Do Val was a senior measurement engineer from 2019 to 2024. He introduced innovative technology to Petrobras and Saudi Aramco during his tenure, aligning their practices with American Petroleum Institute standards.
From 2018 to 2019, Mr. Do Val worked as an independent consultant. He also succeeded as a measurement specialist engineer at Saudi Aramco from 2010 to 2018. His notable achievements during this period included developing a technical approach using liquid ultrasonic meters without pipe provers in custody transfer operations and implementing liquid ultrasonic meters at SUMED's receiving facilities in Egypt. These innovations resulted in substantial financial savings and improved accuracy in petroleum measurement.
Mr. Do Val's earlier career included roles as a measurement engineer at Petrobras from 2008 to 2010 and as an independent consultant at Anadarko Petroleum in 2008. He also served as a research engineer and project coordinator at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro between 2004 and 2008 and as a leader auditor in flow measurement at the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels, from 2001 to 2004.
In preparation for his career, Mr. Do Val received a Bachelor of Science in engineering from the Catholic University of Petrópolis in 1996 and a Master of Science in mechanical engineering with a focus on thermal science from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro in 2001 and a Master of Business Administration in energy management from Fundação Getulio Vargas in 2001.
As a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Mr. Do Val continues to contribute significantly to his field while balancing his professional achievements and personal interests.
As a testament to his hard work, Mr. Do Val secured seven U.S. patents related to maintaining solar power modules and an integrated sediment and water analysis device. He also published numerous articles on performance-based methods for determining the calibration frequency of upright cylindrical tanks in custody service and best practices for operating truck scales in the petroleum industry.
Mr. Do Val has been recognized with several awards throughout his career. He received Certificates of Recognition for presenting at the Custody Measurement Technical Exchange Meeting in 2011 and for outstanding achievements in reducing crude oil transportation losses between Saudi Aramco and Ain Sukhna Port in Egypt in 2012. He received three additional Certificates of Recognition from Saudi Aramco in 2016 for his efforts to avoid potential gas measurement under-billing due to bias error in flow meter calibration factors, filing a patent on an integrated sediment and water apparatus and analytical method and publishing an article in the International Organization of Legal Metrology Journal. Mr. Do Val attributes his success to his unwavering dedication to studying relevant standards.
