NASHVILLE, TN, October 11, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Colin MacLeod Barker Sr. has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Barker has established a distinguished career in interventional cardiology, currently serving as an associate professor, the director of interventional cardiology, the director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory, and the director of the fellowship training program at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center since 2019. In this multifaceted role, Dr. Barker dedicates 60% of his time to clinical work – seeing patients and performing procedures and surgeries – and 40% to administrative, leadership and teaching roles. Before joining the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, he was part of the interventional cardiology team at Houston Methodist Hospital from 2012 to 2019. Throughout his career, Dr. Barker has been deeply involved in advancing the field of cardiology through both clinical practice and research.

Dr. Barker's commitment to cardiology extends beyond his clinical duties. He has been a faculty member at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF) and a frequent lecturer and presenter at national and international conferences. His research has significantly contributed to the understanding and treatment of heart disease, particularly through his role as principal investigator on several clinical trials investigating novel therapies for coronary artery disease, heart valve disease and congestive heart failure. Notably, Dr. Barker led the National Institutes of Health-funded "PREDICT Scripps Pilot Study," which explored the relationship between genetics and patient response to medication in heart disease treatments.

Dr. Barker's professional affiliations further underscore his dedication to the field. He has been a fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions since 2007 and holds memberships with several committees within the American College of Cardiology. These roles have allowed him to influence policy, education and practice standards in interventional cardiology.

Dr. Barker's academic journey laid the foundation for his illustrious career. After completing a bachelor's degree from Bucknell University, he completed a master's degree in marine science from Boston University in 1997. Although initially interested in marine biology, Dr. Barker shifted his focus to medicine, earning his Doctor of Medicine from Boston University in 2001. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Vanderbilt University, followed by fellowships in cardiology/cardiovascular disease at New York University and advanced interventional cardiology at the Scripps Clinic in Torrey Pines.

Outside his professional life, Dr. Barker is actively involved with several civic-minded organizations, such as Feeding Middle Tennessee, the Harpeth Conservancy and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Foundation. His contributions to cardiology have been recognized with awards, including the Thomas J. Linnemeier Spirit of Interventional Cardiology Young Investigator Award from the Cardiovascular Research Foundation in 2009 and a grant from the Clinical and Translational Science Awards Program from the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Barker's personal life is as fulfilling as his professional one. Born in Washington, he has been married for 20 years and is a proud father to four children. His hobbies include surfing, backpacking, fishing/fly fishing and mountain biking, activities that reflect his love for nature and adventure. Currently representing Vanderbilt University, Dr. Barker is leading an initiative aimed at improving health care access for rural Tennesseans through the Tennessee Healthcare Coalition. This effort seeks to develop strategies to enhance the quality of life across the state by addressing health care accessibility challenges.
