Mr. Gonzales, a distinguished professional in radiology management and administration, has dedicated nearly 40 years to the health care industry. Currently serving as an interim director of radiology at B.E. Smith, an AMN Healthcare Company, he manages the entire radiology department, including CT, MRI, mammography, radiology, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, interventional radiology and bone density. Mr. Gonzales is responsible for overseeing all operational budgets and outcomes as well as capital research and purchases. As a long term leader in healthcare he takes pride in working with new technologists, and mentoring and coaching future leaders in medical imaging.
In addition to his primary role, Mr. Gonzales has been the interim radiology director at Mercy Medical Center in Merced, California, since 2023. Prior to this position, he was the director of diagnostic imaging at Carlsbad Medical Center from 2019 to 2023. In 2012, he served as the director of radiology at Lincoln County Medical Center, a position he held until 2019. Mr. Gonzales' earlier roles include director of radiology at Artesia General Hospital from 2006 to 2012 and director of diagnostic imaging at Carlsbad Medical Center between 1998 and 2003.
As a proud Latino of Mexican American descent, Mr. Gonzales was a trailblazer, being one of the first in his family to pursue a college education. He began his academic journey at New Mexico State University, where he earned an Associate of Science in radiologic technology in 1985. He then graduated, magna cum laude, in 2007 with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Northwood University. Continuing his education, Mr. Gonzales obtained a Master of Science in radiological administration and healthcare from Midwestern State University in 2010.
As a commitment to his field, Mr. Gonzales maintains several professional affiliations. He has been a member of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists since 1987 and has held various leadership roles within the New Mexico Society of Radiologic Technologists, including serving as chief managing officer, five-time president and chairman of the board. Furthermore, Mr. Gonzales has been a dedicated member of the Elks Lodge for 34 years.
Beyond his career, Mr. Gonzales has been actively engaged in various civic organizations. He served as vice speaker of the ASRT house of delegates from 2004 to 2006, vice president, president-elect, president and board chair of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists beginning in 2018 and was a member of the advisory board for Doña Ana Community College's Radiology program in Las Cruces, NM from 1988 to 2023. He also served as a board member with the ASRT Educational Foundation. Among his many accolades, Mr. Gonzales was named a Distinguished Alumni by New Mexico State University's Doña Ana Community College in 2023 and was elevated to Fellow of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists in 2011. Other accomplishments were being elevated to Life Member of the New Mexico Society of Radiologic Technologists in 2011 and he was recognized as semi-finalist by AuntMinnie.com "The Best of Radiology" as one of the "Most Effective Radiology Administrative/Managers" in 2022. As President of the ASRT he took pride in introducing his initiatives in diversity in radiology programs, working on a Roadmap for Managers though the ASRT and the main initiative recognizing the Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy professionals as essential healthcare employees through the ASRT Be Seen campaign www.asrt.org/beseen.
Born in Carlsbad, Mr. Gonzales values spending time with his family and grandchildren. He has been married to his wife Gwen going on 39 years. He has two children, Alan 36 and Alana 34. He also has 6 grandchildren. Looking ahead, he plans to continue contributing to the field by serving as an interim director or chief operating officer at various facilities with the goal of modernizing and enhancing departmental operations and mentoring other medical imaging professionals. Mr. Gonzales also aims to maintain his involvement with the ASRT through active participation in several committees within the organization, a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence in radiology management and administration.
