Dr. Nauta is an esteemed professional in neurosurgery who has been affiliated with the University of Louisville since 2009 as a professor and residency program co-director in the department of neurological surgery. Responsible for maintaining the program's health through various credentialing certifying bodies, such as the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, he ensures the program retains its certification while focusing on the training aspect of the residency program. Additionally, Dr. Nauta researches neuroanatomy and clinical areas related to treating brain degenerative disorders and hydrocephalus. He now practices general neurosurgery and rotates on call for the University of Louisville level I trauma center.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Nauta garnered success as a faculty member of the University of Toronto, beginning in 1980, where he contributed to academic and clinical advancements. He then joined Dr. Howard Eisenberg in the division of neurosurgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1983. Productive there both clinically and in research he was soon recruited by Dr. Donlin Long to Johns Hopkins University in 1985, where he served as a vascular neurosurgeon alongside endovascular pioneer Dr. Gerard Debrun, and neuro-ophthalmologist Dr. Neil Miller. Together with them, he developed the superior ophthalmic vein approach to the carotid-cavernous fistula. During his tenure at Johns Hopkins, he was also responsible for initiating the stereotactic radiosurgery program with Dr. Moody Wharam, then director for radiation oncology. Dr. Nauta's years on campus included developing a full-service line of treatment methods for brain Arteriovenous Malformations, Aneurysms and fistulae. In 1993, Dr. Nauta returned to the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston as Chairman for the Division of Neurosurgery, leading the residency program there for a tenure of over 15 years. While there, he changed his research focus to work on surgical treatment for pain with Dr. W.D. Willis, the renowned sensory system physiologist, and his colleagues. Together they conceived and proved practical and effective the punctate midline myelotomy operation for the relief of severe visceral cancer pain. Later this was expanded to include some types of intractable severe benign visceral origin pain as well.
In preparation for his career, Dr. Nauta earned a bachelor's degree from Duke University, followed by a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy from Case Western Reserve University in 1974. His PhD work elucidated brain circuits related to a particularly difficult region of the brain known as the basal ganglia. These academic achievements laid a strong foundation for his illustrious career in neurosurgery. Additional academic pursuits to Dr. Nauta's credit include an internship and residency in neurosurgery at the University of Toronto in Canada and a fellowship with renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Gazi Yasargil in Zurich, Switzerland.
Dr. Nauta's contributions to neurosurgery have been recognized through his membership in prestigious organizations such as the Society for Neurological Surgery. He was also a long time member of the Texas Association of Neurological Surgeons (TANS), serving as president in 2001-2002. Dr. Nauta frequently emphasized to his surgical colleagues the importance of state-level jurisdiction in medical-legal matters and directed the TANS during its support of successful malpractice reform at the state level. Among his accolades, Dr. Nauta was honored as a "Kentucky Colonel" by the Governor of Kentucky for helping to preserve the credentialing of the level I trauma center in Louisville.
