Dr. Lary has enjoyed a distinguished career dedicated to epidemiology, developmental biology and public health service. Since 2001, he has been recognized as an epidemiologist emeritus at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Shortly thereafter, he became a toxicology consultant at Hood and Associates.

Leveraging his tenure in the field, Dr. Lary's career began at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1978, where he served as a research biologist. Over the years, he advanced to roles such as research grants director, epidemiologist and toxicologist. During this time, Dr. Lary managed the national hotline for birth defects, providing critical advice to physicians and patients. His efforts directly contributed to saving lives by preventing unnecessary abortions in approximately 10 instances.

In addition to his work at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Lary was an adjunct professor in the department of anatomy and cell biology, school of medicine, at the University of Cincinnati from 1979 to 1988. He also taught in the school of public health.

Dr. Lary is highly educated. He has held a Bachelor of Science in physics from the University of Alabama since 1968, a Master of Science in developmental biology and embryology since 1973 and a Doctor of Philosophy in developmental biology and embryology from the University of Alabama in 1977. These academic achievements laid the foundation for his groundbreaking work in birth defect epidemiology and toxicology.

Dr. Lary has dedicated his professional life to understanding and preventing birth defects. His extensive experience in both academic and practical applications of epidemiology and toxicology has made him a respected figure in his field. Dr. Lary's most notable achievement includes his collaboration on research that discovered the preventive effects of folic acid on severe birth defects, a breakthrough that has had a profound impact on public health.

Throughout his career, Dr. Lary has been actively involved in several professional organizations. He is a member of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention and the Teratology Society. Additionally, he served on the international board of directors for the Bioelectromagnetics Society and is a retired captain from the Commissioned Corps of U.S. Public Health Service. Dr. Lary's contributions to these organizations have furthered research and policy development in his areas of expertise.

Dr. Lary's commitment to public service extends beyond his professional work. He has volunteered extensively, including aiding tornado recovery efforts in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, participating in church activities, and working with medical mission teams in Brazil and Kenya. Furthermore, Dr. Lary remains active by competing in senior Olympics and masters track and field events. Between 2004 and 2010, he was notably ranked as sixth in the world in the decathlon for his age group and fifth in the world in the outdoor pentathlon. He competed with the USA Track & Field Masters Team at a world championship event in Florida where he won three medals for the United States.

In addition to his professional and civic contributions, Dr. Lary has authored 70 scientific and medical publications, sharing his knowledge and findings with the broader scientific community. His work has influenced national standards for exposure to radiofrequency radiation and microwaves, showcasing his diverse expertise. Dr. Lary's dedication to community service is complemented by two Commendation Medals from the Commissioned Corps of U.S. Public Health Service.
