After graduating from Drake University with a Bachelor of Science in economics and marketing, Donald L. Huizenga began his career with Old Kent Bank & Trust in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1968. The same year, he joined the U.S. Army Reserve. Though he left the reserve after six years of service, he remained with the bank until 1977, rising to vice president of trust operations in 1976. From 1977 to 1988, he served as the president of Cedar Springs Castings, Inc., and from 1988 to 1994, he served as the president of Larson Foundries. He then moved to Kurdziel Industries, filling the chief executive officer position until 2003.
Since 2004, he has served as the managing principal of Deacon Associates in Phoenix, Arizona. In addition to his primary position with Deacon Associates, he joined the board of EQI Ltd in 2012, now an Atlas Holdings Company as of 2018, and he has been an asset to their team in the years since. Mentoring junior officers has played an important part in Mr. Huizenga's career, and his efforts to foster the development and advancement of his mentees have benefited companies and their customers, adding a lasting but intangible value. During his tenure at Kurdziel Industries, he recruited five executives. After he left the company, all five demonstrated capability and ambition, rising to chief executive officer positions within other companies. Each of them has expressed gratitude regarding his role in their professional growth, and he is grateful to have had the opportunity to shape a younger generation of business leaders.
Mr. Huizenga is passionate about community involvement and has held many high positions within various community organizations, including campaign chairman for Lorain County United Way, president and board member of the World Foundry Organization and chairman of the Lorain County Manufacturing Council. He was affiliated with the Rockford Ambulance Co. and is a former member of the Gulf Oil government advisory council. He also served on the Board of Directors of Hackley Health Systems, and the Western Michigan University College of Engineering and Applied Sciences advisory board. For his work with the Global Foundry Industry, he received the Jozef Suchy Medal {for Meritorious Service in 2022. In 1996, the Keating Foundation presented him with the Freedom Award.
Within his field, Mr. Huizenga has been an active and assertive professional. He is a lifetime member and past president of the American Foundry Society, and past president of the Foundry Association of Michigan and was involved with Rotary International. He was also a member of the executive council of The Conference Board in NYC. In the next three to five years, Mr. Huizenga plans to travel alongside his wife while maintaining meaningful connections with others, as he believes connections are foundational to a productive and meaningful life.
