Dr. Kim is an experienced primary care physician who has been associated with the Veteran's Administration (VA) San Diego Healthcare System since 2019. For over 10 years, he has dedicated his professional life to examining veterans who may have been exposed to environmental hazards during their service, including ionizing radiation, Agent Orange, and other ecological materials. Furthermore, Dr. Kim mentors medical residents and oversees their patient examinations and case discussions as part of their primary care program.
As the facility's Environmental Health Registry Lead Clinician since 2021, Dr. Kim conducts vital work necessary for the VA and relevant to national interests, gaining a deeper understanding of various environmental exposures and their impact on health conditions.
Before joining the VA in San Diego, Dr. Kim worked at the Tucson, Arizona, VA post-deployment clinic from 2014 to 2019, where he evaluated new patients returning from overseas service for environmental exposures. From 2017, he also served as an assistant clinical professor at the University of Arizona in the College of Medicine, mentoring medical students in the primary care clinic department.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Kim enjoyed a long and distinguished tenure operating a private practice in the Portland metropolitan area between 1997 and 2014, providing comprehensive primary medical care to patients.
Dr. Kim graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, in 1992. Subsequently, he completed an internal medicine residency at Yale New Haven Hospital's Saint Raphael Campus from 1993 to 1996. Dr. Kim is currently board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and has maintained this certification, indicative of his expertise in primary care, for the past 26 years.
Dr. Kim's dedication to his field is further exemplified by his involvement in various civic associations and creative projects. He was also honored to receive several accolades, including VA ICARE Honors, for his exceptional contributions to veteran health care. Through his work, Dr. Kim continues to significantly impact the lives of many veterans and their families.
Eager for future accomplishments, Dr. Kim aims to expand the VA's Environmental Health Registry program to ensure it can be smoothly implemented into the VA care system and allow greater accessibility for all veterans enrolled in the VA system. This program will also help veterans to receive assessments for potential service-connected conditions and possibly enable them to apply for disability benefits from the government. Additionally, in the future, Dr. Kim plans to reduce his primary care work and transition to VA Compensation/Pension disability assessments. He hopes to work with the VA Compensation/Pension disability department until he retires.
