Marquis Who's Who Honors Noreen Kale Naughton for Expertise in Fine Art and Higher Education

Over the years, Ms. Naughton ascended through various academic ranks, becoming a professor of art in 1998 and ultimately achieving the title of professor emerita in 2004.

    KANEOHE, HI, October 22, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Noreen Kale Naughton has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Ms. Naughton, professor emerita of art at Kapiʻolani Community College, part of the University of Hawaii System in Honolulu, has dedicated her career to advancing and enriching art education. Her tenure at the institution began in 1985 when she joined as an instructor of art. Over the years, Ms. Naughton ascended through various academic ranks, becoming a professor of art in 1998 and ultimately achieving the title of professor emerita in 2004.

In addition to her teaching roles, Ms. Naughton coordinated the art advisory board at Kapi'olani Community College from 1990 to 2003. She also led study-abroad tours to Italy from 1989 to 2003, providing students with invaluable exposure to the origins of Western art. Ms. Naughton's leadership extended beyond her college as she played a pivotal role in consolidating all art courses across the University of Hawaii system, culminating in developing the first system-wide course articulation agreement in 1994. She also chaired the University of Hawaii System-wide Arts and Humanities Standing Committee for Articulation from 1992 to 2000.

Ms. Naughton's academic career began with a lectureship in art at Leeward Community College in Pearl City, Hawaii, from 1970 to 1977, followed by a similar role at the University of Hawaii between 1977 and 1985. As an artist, she has held numerous one-woman shows in Hawaii since 1979. Before showcasing her artistic talents, Ms. Naughton was a violoncellist with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra from 1965 to 1968.

Inspired by her late father, a scientist with remarkable artistic talent, Ms. Naughton studied at the University of Hawaii, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1967, a Master of Education in 1974 and a Master of Fine Arts in 1979.

Ms. Naughton has been actively involved in various professional organizations, including serving as the secretary on the board of directors for the Hawaii Consortium for the Arts from 1997 to 2001. She has also been a member of Foundations in Art Theory and Education and the College Art Association, and is a member of the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly.

In light of her contributions to the field, Ms. Naughton has been recognized with several awards, including the University of Hawaii Board of Regents Excellence in Teaching Award in 1994 and Purchase Awards from the Honolulu Museum of Art in 1996 and the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts in 1979, 2018 and 2024. She was also a staff development grantee at Kapiolani Community College in 1991 and 1994.

Beyond her professional achievements, Ms. Naughton has coordinated the Ho'omaluhia Artist Group from 1985 to 1999. She continues to jury many art exhibitions and present lectures on drawing and painting, including a lecture in 2015 at the New York Studio School, New York City, titled "The Art and Teachings of Nicolas Carone." In 2016 she was Artist-in-Residence at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Her dedication to civic engagement and creative expression underscores her commitment to fostering a vibrant artistic community.

As Ms. Naughton prepares for the future, she aims to develop her career as an artist and to connect with students, colleagues, and other artists in the art world. Although she is no longer actively involved in teaching, she remains dedicated to supporting and guiding individuals in the industry.
