Dr. Musacchio is a distinguished scholar and educator in landscape architecture, urban planning, and ecology. She has served as an Institute on the Environment fellow at the University of Minnesota since 2016. In this capacity, Dr. Musacchio teaches classes in green infrastructure design and geographic information systems, conducts research in these areas, and instructs on the design of cities and towns. Additionally, she has been an associate professor on campus since 2006 and is the Director of the Restorative Environments and Biocultural Design Lab. In 2022, she was invited to be a summer internship mentor for the Doris Duke Conservation Scholar Program at the University of California Santa Cruz.
Affiliated with the University of Minnesota for over two decades, Dr. Musacchio was an Institute on the Environment resident fellow from 2012 to 2016 and an assistant professor between 2003 and 2006. She also garnered experience as an assistant professor at Arizona State University from 2000 to 2003 and an assistant professor at Utah State University from 1993 to 1995.
Dr. Musacchio's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, magna cum laude, in the College of Environmental Science and Forestry from the State University of New York in 1989. Continuing her studies, she earned a Master of Landscape Architecture in 1993. She then pursued a Doctor of Philosophy in urban and regional science from Texas A&M University in 1999. Dr. Musacchio's extensive education has been instrumental in shaping her career and contributions to her field.
Throughout her career, Dr. Musacchio has been actively involved in professional organizations such as the American Society of Landscape Architects, International Association of Landscape Ecology, and Society for Urban Ecology. Additionally, she has made significant contributions to scientific literature, publishing numerous articles in esteemed journals on topics such as ecology, landscape architecture, and urban planning. She has served as a coordinating editor for the international scientific journal "Landscape Ecology" from 2007 to 2017. Dr. Musacchio is an editorial board member of "Landscape and Urban Planning" and "Landscape Architecture Frontiers." Dr. Musacchio also co-authored a book, including "Designing Small Parks: A Manual for Addressing Social and Ecological Concerns" in 2005. This book received the Planetizen 2006 Top 10 Books award.
Dr. Musacchio remains passionate about teaching and writing, and she plans to publish another book.
