After immigrating to the United States from Bolivia, Dr. Violand-Sanchez attended Radford University and earned a Bachelor of Science in 1966. Subsequently, she joined Arizona Western College as an instructor and furthered her studies at Radford, completing a Master of Science in 1968. Over the years, she honed her educational expertise as a teacher and counselor at St. Andrew's School and a researcher at Instituto Boliviano de Estudio y Accion Social in Bolivia. Likewise, Dr. Violand- Sanchez became the first Latina administrator and School Board member in the Arlington Public Schools.
Over the years, Dr. Violand-Sanchez has made a significant impact on the community. Her work as a bilingual resource specialist and secondary project coordinator Title VII at Arlington Public Schools. She established the first bilingual G.E.D. program in Virginia. In 1980 she became the first Latina administrator in Arlington Public Schools, has paved the way for many. Her journey continued with earning an EdD from George Washington University in 1987, where she served as an adjunct professor for ten years. Similarly, she gained valuable expertise as a supervisor of English for speakers of other languages at Arlington Public Schools and as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University. Backed by her considerable expertise in education policy, curriculum development, family engagement and learning styles. In addition to her professional endeavors and affiliations, she has consulted throughout the United States and Latin America.
Dr. Violand-Sanchez life has been defined by her commitments to education and community service. She excels as the founder of non-profit organizations including the Dream Project. This nonprofit organization offers scholarships, mentoring, and scholar and family support to immigrant students whose immigration status creates barriers to higher education in Virginia. Her work has not only provided opportunities for these students but also inspired many others to contribute to their communities.
Throughout her career, Dr. Violand-Sanchez has been recognized for her outstanding contributions. She has authored several publications in English and Spanish regarding bilingual education and learning styles including "Understanding Learning Styles in the Second Language Classroom," "Mentoring and Retaining College Dreamers" in "Teachers as Allies" published by Teachers College Press (2018).
Given her professional achievements and community service she won the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the National Association for Bilingual Education. Her awards include a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award, AAUW American Fellowship, The James Hunter II Human Rights Award, The Mexican American Legal Defense Fund Community Service Award, Washingtonian of the Year, Virginia Community College Exemplary Board Member award, Arlington Community Foundation Spirit of Community Award and "Orgullo de Bolivia" award. These recognitions not only validate her work but also inspire others in the field. While her career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Violand-Sanchez takes the most pride in providing opportunities for immigrant students through the Dream Project.
Though hard work and dedication have brought her far in her career, Dr. Violand-Sanchez is not resting on her laurels. Looking toward the future, Dr. Violand-Sanchez has written her memoir "Dreams and Shadows: An Immigrant Story" to be published in March 2025. Her future goals and aspirations are a testament to her unwavering commitment to her work and community service.
