    CITY ISLAND, NY, October 24, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Dora B. Schriro, JD, EdD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Schriro is an esteemed expert in corrections and immigration detention, having served as the principal of Dora B. Schriro Consulting Services LLC since 2019. In the is role as Expert, she provides consulting services for a number of nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies, conducting inspections, providing oral and written testimony, advocating for the incorporation of the field's best practices, and monitoring remedial activities in order that the conditions in correctional and immigration detention organizations meet or exceed industry standards. Dr. Schriro also serves as a Commissioner on several professional organizations, notably the American Bar Association, Commission on Immigration, and the Women's Refugee Commission. With a career spanning several decades, she has made significant contributions to the fields of criminal justice and immigration detention.

Before opening her own practice, Dr. Schriro served as the commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection from 2014 to 2018. In the preceding years, she was the director of the Missouri and Arizona Departments of Corrections, the commissioner of the St. Louis City Division of Corrections and the commissioner for the New York City Department of Correction, and Warden of a city jail also in the St. Louis.

Dr. Schriro's expertise extends beyond state and local correctional systems, also serving as a special advisor to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano and as the founding director of the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Office of Detention Policy and Planning. Her work in these roles focused on improving detention policies and practices, advocating for humane treatment and implementing systems reforms.

Dr. Schriro's academic achievements have been instrumental in her success. She earned a Juris Doctor from St. Louis University School of Law in 2002, a doctorate in public administration from Columbia University in 1984, a Master of Science from the University of Massachusetts-Boston and a Bachelor of Arts cum laude from Northeastern University. She further attributes her success to the steadfast support she received from all those who appointed her to these positions, her parents and grandparents, her husband and life partner, and many friends and colleagues throughout her career.

Dr. Schriro's dedication to her field is also evidenced through her numerous awards. She received the Allied Professional Award from the U.S. Department of Justice in 2012, the Innovations in American Government Award for "Getting Ready" in Arizona in 2008, the Distinguished Service to State Government Award from the National Governors Association in 2006 and was named Top Correctional Administrator by her peers in 1999. Over the course of her career, she also published a number of articles in professional journals. She is especially proud of the roadmap she prepared in 2009 while at DHS "A Report on the Preliminary Assessment of ICE Detention Policies and Practices: A Recommended Course of Action for Systems Reforms," adopted immediately as its template for reforming immigration detention and continues to held in high regard by the field today.

Throughout the course of her career, Dr. Schriro has been the first woman to have led each of the three state agencies in which she served, and the only correctional professional to have led two city and three state systems in the criminal justice arena.

Dr. Schriro's passion for criminology was ignited by a 45-minute lecture during her senior year in high school and inspired her to pursue a career in criminal justice. Looking towards the future, she remains open to and excited by the field's infinite possibilities.
