TUCSON, AZ, October 24, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Linda T. Darling, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Having enjoyed over four decades of contributions to history education, Dr. Darling has entered retirement with the distinguished title of professor emerita at the University of Arizona. Specializing in Middle Eastern history, focusing on socio-economic history, finance administration, and the Ottoman Empire, she began teaching courses at the University of Arizona in 1989, advancing from an assistant professor to an associate professor in 1996. Remaining active in this role until 2013, she became a full professor and retired in 2024. Throughout her tenure at the university, Dr. Darling served as an effective mentor to colleagues and graduate students, advising on dissertations, conducting research, writing, and, ultimately, challenging stereotypes and assumptions about the Muslim world and inviting her pupils to cultivate their positions on a number of difficult and controversial subjects.

Encouraged to enter the teaching profession at a young age, Dr. Darling initially studied English literature at the University of Connecticut, from which she earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1967. Following this accomplishment, she received a Master of Arts in Teaching in English and education at the University of Chicago. In the following years, she served as a teaching assistant for the social sciences division at UC from 1980 until 1981, after which she worked as an accessions and serials processor for the Near East Collection at the UC Library until 1983. She taught students as an instructor of Middle Eastern history at UC in 1980-81 and worked at the American Research Institute as an administrator from 1986 to 1989.

Attaining a PhD in history at UC in 1990, Dr. Darling embarked on her career as a professor at the University of Arizona. Securing this role was instrumental to her endeavors, affording her access to libraries, conferences, and bountiful opportunities to communicate and network with other academics throughout the field. Throughout her subsequent efforts, she is most proud to have kept socio-economic history relevant as an agenda in her course curricula. She has worked hard to maintain the study of society and the economy by focusing on practical matters and using documentary evidence. Likewise, Dr. Darling is gratified to have earned extensive recognition in Turkey and the Balkans, where her work has earned a great deal of acclaim.

Since beginning her career in academia, Dr. Darling has published several books, two of which are translated into Turkish. Her peer-reviewed articles and chapters have appeared in several high-profile publications, including the Journal of the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association, Turkish Historical Review, the Review of Middle East Studies, Turcica, Comparative Studies in Society and History, and many more. She has also presented extensively on a number of topics within her academic circles, such as at the International Congress for Ottoman Social and Economic History, the Middle East Studies Association, Halcyon Days in Crete, Early Modern Ottoman Studies, and others.

Dr. Darling has maintained her affiliation with several relevant organizations to remain aware of developments in her field. She is president of the International Association for Ottoman Social and Economic History and the American Research Institute in Turkey. She sits on the international advisory council of the World Congress of Middle East Studies and has been Arizona's delegate to the American Research Institute in Turkey. She is also a past president of the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association and continues to hold editorial board positions with numerous publications and journals of note.

Throughout her career, Dr. Darling has earned several accolades and recognitions, encompassing numerous research grants and invitations to share her scholarly prowess in Turkey. She was also granted a fellowship at the Morris K. Udall Center for Public Policy in 2001 and was nominated as the University of Arizona's National Women's History Professor of the Month in 1994. In accounting for her standout success, Dr. Darling largely credits her diligence in both research and teaching and her desire to present Middle Easterners as people seeking to solve ordinary problems with a different set of resources.

Looking ahead, Dr. Darling aspires to complete three book projects and see her last students graduate. Despite her retirement, she remains dedicated to pursuing further writing and research in the years to come.
