Dr. Hundahl's distinguished career began with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry (magna cum laude) from Harvard University in 1977 and then an MD from the Yale School of Medicine in 1981. After a 5-year general surgical residency, he completed a 2-year surgical oncology fellowship through Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 1988. His career as an active surgical oncologist, clinical investigator, and academician began in 1988 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
In the following years, Dr. Hundahl held roles of increasing responsibility with the Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, Cancer Research Center Hawaii, the University of Hawaii at Manoa's John A. Burns School of Medicine, the VA Northern California Health Care System, and the University of California, Davis. Additionally, from 1998-2000, Dr. Hundahl served as the elected Chair of the national 54-organization Commission on Cancer. While maintaining a busy practice in surgical oncology in Honolulu, he also served as Vice Chair of the National Cancer Data Base, a Governor for the American College of Surgeons, and Chief of Surgery at the Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu.
In 1986, Dr. Hundahl co-founded a large non-profit provider of home-based medical care, Comprehensive Home Services Hawaii's, now d.b.a. as CareResource Hawaii, for which he is a lifetime director. It remains the largest Medicare-certified non-profit provider of home-based medical care in Hawaii.
Dr. Hundahl's considerable research activity encompasses computer-guided surgery for gastric cancer, the innovative development of the Maruyama Index as a surgical quality metric, and the use of adjuvant chemo-radiation for gastric cancer. He has also published extensive registry-based studies in thyroid, parathyroid, and other cancers. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed research articles and over 20 book chapters.
In 2002, he became Professor of Surgery at the University of California at Davis and Chief of Surgery for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Northern California. In this capacity, he developed multiple successful grant-funded clinical collaborations between the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs. From 2014-2016, he was recognized as Honorary Commander of the 60th Medical Group at Travis Air Force Base.
Dr. Hundahl's achievements have been formally recognized multiple times, with a 2000 Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Surgeons, the Nishi Award for Best Paper in Gastric Cancer from the International Gastric Cancer Association, a Hobart Keese Award from the Yale University School of Medicine, and the Joan Oettinger Memorial Award from the University of California, Davis School of Medicine.
Following retirement at the end of 2019, Dr. Hundahl has been actively sailing in Nantucket Sound and managing family business affairs. He and his wife, Chrissy, reside in the U.S.A. with residences in Hawaii, Sacramento, and Nantucket. He is a member of the Saint Botolph Club in Boston, the Pacific Club in Honolulu, and the Nantucket Yacht Club.
