Dr. Wheat is a distinguished professional in the field of family medicine with more than a decade of experience. She currently serves as the program director for the Northwestern McGaw Family Medicine Residency Program at Delnor Hospital, a role she has held since 2024. She is also currently a career and life coach and public speaker through her own enterprise, Santina Wheat LLC and an Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, where she has been imparting knowledge since 2020.

Dr. Wheat's career began as a family medicine resident at the Northwestern McGaw Family Medicine Residency Program in Humboldt Park from 2010 to 2013. Following her residency, she joined Erie Family Health Centers as a family physician with obstetrics in 2013, a role she continues to hold. She also served as the site medical director at Erie Family Health Centers Humboldt Park location from 2015 to 2019 and was the medical director for Lending Hands for Life at the same center from 2015 to 2024. Her tenure at Northwestern University began in 2014 as an assistant professor of family and community medicine, a position she held until her promotion to associate professor in 2020.

Throughout her career, Dr. Wheat has been dedicated to improving health care settings and addressing gender bias in medical research. She has developed tools to promote inclusivity and led teams to create systems that empower individuals to assess their own inclusivity practices. She is deeply proud of her contributions, especially when past residents achieve leadership roles or spearhead innovative care initiatives.

Dr. Wheat's academic journey laid a strong foundation for her professional achievements. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Washington University in St. Louis in 2004, followed by a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and a Master of Public Health from the University of Illinois Chicago, both in 2010.

Furthering her expertise, Dr. Wheat holds several certifications as a career, health and life coach and an ALSO-certified instructor. She also maintains a family medicine certification from the American Board of Family Medicine Inc., an Equity Matters certificate and a LEADS Fellowship from the Association of Departments of Family Medicine.

Throughout her career, Dr. Wheat attributes her success to supporting others in achieving their goals and the invaluable guidance gained from her mentors. Her passion for adapting health care to meet community needs has driven her career forward, allowing her to expand services and improve accessibility for patients and teams alike.

In addition to her professional roles, Dr. Wheat is actively involved in civic organizations. She serves as a board member for the Illinois Family Health Foundation and has received numerous accolades, including being named a fellow by the American Academy of Family Physicians and received teaching awards from the Feinberg Academy of Medical Educators.

In her personal life, Dr. Wheat enjoys traveling, reading and spending time with her family. She remains passionately committed to making a positive impact on health care and aspires to expand her influence across the country through innovative publications and presentations. She also dedicates significant time to supporting other program directors and continuously seeks new ways to share her knowledge with those in need.
