Following his residency, he pursued a fellowship in integrative and behavioral medicine at The University of Texas Medical Branch, where he also served as a clinical instructor from 2016 to 2017. His passion for education led him to a full-time teaching position at the University of the Incarnate Word, where he has since advanced from assistant professor to associate professor.
In addition to his academic roles, Dr. Slater has held various positions at The University of Texas Medical Branch, including attending physician and clinical assistant professor from 2017 to 2019. He also served as an adjunct clinical assistant professor at The University of Texas Medical Branch from 2019 to 2022. His dedication to medical education is further evidenced by his involvement with the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners as a Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination reviewer and developer.
Dr. Slater's educational background is extensive and includes a Master of Public Health in global health from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in 2016 and a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 2008. He is board-certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine and in integrative medicine by the American Board of Integrative Medicine.
Throughout his career, Dr. Slater has been actively involved in various professional organizations. He serves as a course director and faculty member for the Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine (AIHM) and advises the University of the Incarnate Word Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group under the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Additionally, he is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Beyond his professional life, Dr. Slater is committed to civic engagement through his role as a volunteer adviser for the University of the Incarnate Word Community Garden, AIHM Student Alliance, and Medical Students for a Sustainable Future.
