James E. Trosko, PhD, channels years of experience into his work with Michigan State University

Due to his vast knowledge in both radiation and chemical- induced human health effects, he also contributed nearly 500 peer-reviewed articles professional journals.

OKEMOS, MI, October 29, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- James E. Trosko, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Trosko's journey is a testament to the transformative power of historic events. Growing up near Lake Michigan, he developed a fascination for the outdoors that was fostered by a high school teacher who encouraged his interest in science. Despite financial struggles during his first year of college, he was inspired by the launch of Sputnik in 1967. His trajectory, as a result of being selected for a scholarship program to advance science and technology education for a scholarship program to advance response to Soviet achievements, led to earning a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, biology, physics and math from Central Michigan University to a Master of science and PhD in radiation genetics from Michigan State University. This demonstrated the profound impact of historic events in shaping individual destinies and national priorities.

During the early stages of his career, Dr. Trosko worked as a professor in both the undergraduate residential college, Justin Morrill College, and the new established College of Human Medicine, Department of Pediatrics and Human Development. Similarly, he was invited as a Distinguished Professor, under his National Cancer Institute's Career Development Award, to work at the University of Wisconsin McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research with Dr. Van R. Potter on tumor promotion and bioethics. Over the years, he gained valuable international experience as Chief of Research for the Radiation Effects Research Foundation in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. Due to his vast knowledge in both radiation and chemical- induced human health effects, he also contributed nearly 500 peer-reviewed articles professional journals, including the Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. US; Nature; Science; Cancer Research, Toxicological Science and J. Stem Cell Research & Therapy. Backed by his considerable experience, Dr. Trosko excels today as a Distinguished Emeritus Professor at Michigan State University.

Dr. Trosko's career is filled with highlights, but he takes the most pride in his groundbreaking discoveries in radiation genetics, epigenetic toxicology, human adult stem cells isolation and the role of nutrition and diets on modifying risks to children's health. His research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the 1960's led to the discovery of the role of radiation-induced DNA damage, its repair and mutation formation in human cells. Even prior to that, he worked with Dr. Barnett Rosenberg on the discovery of the widely used anti-cancer drug, cisplatin. Later in the 1970's, his discovery of non-mutagenic events led to the concept of epigenetic toxicology.
