As a licensed professional counselor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), Mr. Polk collaborates to manage the mental health needs of the student population while expertly helping clients manage stressors, obtain necessary resources, and develop new strategies to deal with life on life's terms.
Exceptional academic and early achievements define Mr. Polk's presence in the field. He began working as an intern at the Golden Triangle Recovery Center (Starkville, MS) from 2010 to 2012, where he gained valuable introductory knowledge in addiction services and the world of counseling. He earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Mississippi State University in 2011 before pursuing a Master of Science in clinical mental health counseling in 2013. While in graduate school, he worked concurrently as a certified pharmacy technician at CVS Health, as well as completing his practicum/internship at LIFECORE Addiction Services (Tupelo, MS) during the final year of graduate school.
After graduation, Mr. Polk served as a mental health therapist for Region 8 Mental Health (Rankin County, MS) in 2016. Mr. Polk would leave Region 8 in 2018 but continued working as a certified pharmacy technician, which led to his employment at UMMC. As dedication to mental health treatment continued, Mr. Polk began concurrently working as a contract mental health therapist at Resilience Counseling and Recovery Center (Flowood, MS) from November 2020 to November 2021.
Mr. Polk's association with UMMC led to a transition into his current position in February 2024. Throughout his career, he has also been an active member of several industry-related organizations, including the American Counseling Association, Chi Sigma Iota and Kappa Delta Pi, and each affiliation has provided him with additional resources to excel in his field. Mr. Polk attributes his academic and professional advancement thus far to perseverance and his keen determination to always advance.
Outside of his professional life, Mr. Polk enjoys spending time with friends, learning new things, and studying French. Looking toward the future, Mr. Polk is passionate about expanding the counseling program he has helped to launce at UMMC, grounded in his belief that by embedding counseling services into different aspects of student life, the university community will gain access to a better quality of well-being.
