As a vice chairman of Newmark, a commercial real estate advisory and services company, since 2017, he has been responsible for various duties, including global business development, sales, client care and quality assurance, project management, and practice leadership. Before being named to his position, Mr. Hess was the executive managing director of consulting at Newmark from 2008 to 2017. During this period, he played a crucial role in numerous high-profile projects, including assisting Nike in their decision to remain headquartered in Oregon and establishing several new gigafactory locations in North America and Europe. From 2004 to 2008, he was a consulting partner at Cushman & Wakefield, where he honed his skills in location strategy and site selection and led several large global manufacturing projects in the Life Sciences, Metals Manufacturing and Consumer Products industries.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Hess spent eight years at Deloitte & Touche LLP where he served the organization between 1996 and 2003, progressing from senior manager to principal. Mr. Hess's career began at PHH Fantus in 1985, where he advanced from associate to manager over more than a decade and was coached and mentored by some of the world's top experts in business location strategy and site selection.
Mr. Hess is highly educated, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in geography and urban planning from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1985 and a Master of Business Administration from DePaul Driehaus in 1995. He also completed several executive education programs, including the Winning Sustainability Strategies Program at IMD, the Scenarios Programme at the University of Oxford, the Complex Problem Solving and System Dynamics forum at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and several programs at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management related to Global Supply Chain Management and Factory Physics/Lean Manufacturing.
Throughout his career, Mr. Hess has been recognized for his contributions to the field. His most notable accomplishment is leading the $4 billion ThyssenKrupp Steel and Stainless Steel project in Alabama announced in 2007, which involved coordinating a team of over 100 people and making multiple trips to Germany and throughout the southeastern United States. He was also inducted into the Midwest Commercial Real Estate Hall of Fame in 2013.
Mr. Hess is deeply committed to civic engagement and public speaking. He has been involved in consultancy work in Guatemala, where he assisted a prominent local family in developing a substantial industrial park aimed at curbing youth immigration by creating employment opportunities. This project holds personal significance for Mr. Hess as it includes a tree planted in honor of his late daughter Rachel Irene Hess.
Eager for the future, Mr. Hess is dedicated to continuous learning and plans to enhance his expertise completing a climate change executive program at Harvard University.
