Dr. Pataki-Schweizer is a distinguished research affiliate at The Burke Museum at the University of Washington, where he has been contributing his expertise in anthropology and geography since 2016. With a career spanning over five decades, he has made significant conceptual contributions to the fields of culture, health, archaeology and Papua New Guinea studies. Concurrent with his primary role, Dr. Pataki-Schweizer has been an Instructor in Anthropology at Portland Community College since 2002. Prior to these positions, he served as the managing director, senior consultant and co-founder of Impact Horizons, a consultancy firm from 1992 to 2005 and was a scientist specializing in social and health behavior at the World Health Organization between 1996 and 1999. He also held tenure as an associate professor of behavioral science at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Papua New Guinea from 1974 to 1996.
Dr. Pataki-Schweizer's earlier academic roles include serving as a research anthropologist and research associate at the University of California, San Francisco from 1970 to 1973 and as a research associate and instructor at the University of Colorado from 1969 to 1970. He began his academic career as an assistant professor of anthropology and humanities at Reed College from 1967 to 1969.
In addition to his academic and professional achievements, Dr. Pataki-Schweizer has served as a consultant for the World Bank, USAID and AUS and held a private pilot's license since 1974. His military service as a Specialist II in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1954 to 1956 left him with injuries that resulted in a lifelong disability but also provided him with valuable experiences that shaped his career.
Dr. Pataki-Schweizer's educational background is extensive and impressive. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in cultural ecology from the University of Washington in 1968 after completing his Master of Arts in statistical geography at the same institution. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in pre-medicine from The College at the University of Chicago, obtained in 1961, and completed an internship in psychiatry with the Ministry of Health, Government of Papua New Guinea in 1981.
Throughout his career, Dr. Pataki-Schweizer has been recognized with several awards, such as a Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Department of Labor, a French Government Award for Translation from the University of Chicago, a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Award and a fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health. Additionally, he has authored numerous articles, books and works in professional journals that have contributed significantly to his fields of expertise.
Dr. Pataki-Schweizer's civic involvement includes hosting FM radio health programs in Chicago, Seattle and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea from 1958 to 2000. In his personal life, he enjoys spending time with his family, writing, mountain climbing and flying. Looking ahead, he plans to complete his current writing projects, including a children's book based on his experiences in Papua New Guinea.
