After earning a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Kentucky, Dr. Vanaman expanded his training, earning a PhD in biochemistry from Duke University then completing postdoctoral studies at Stanford University. He began his career as a professor at Duke University College of Medicine where he taught medical and graduate students for nearly a decade and a half during the 1970s and early 1980s. His research involved studying the structure and function of viral proteins including those from animal viruses which cause tumors and immunodeficiency disorders. At Duke, he also began life-long studies of calcium signaling mechanisms and their evolution.
From 1983 until his retirement in 2007, Dr. Vanaman was chair then professor in the biochemistry department at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical School. During this period, his laboratory expanded studies to describe the properties of the protein calmodulin, a multifunctional, calcium-binding protein expressed in all eukaryotic cells where it is essential in regulating numerous critical biochemical and biological processes. His contributions to the field of biochemistry are appreciated and recognized. Upon retiring, he remained active in the field of Biochemistry as an associate editor for the Journal of Biological Chemistry, where he participated in creating the first fully electronic journal. Dr. Vanaman has authored and co-authored works in Glycobiology, the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry and numerous other Journals and compendia.
In addition to studies of calcium regulation, Dr. Vanaman also collaborated with local colleagues in examining molecular mechanisms of epilepsy.
Dr. Vanaman is extremely proud of his children, Thomas R. and Emily Luna. His eldest is a computer specialist involve in servicing the NC State Employee Credit Union System. His youngest is a marketing professional for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Vanaman also has 2 granddaughters, Ava a Pre-Med student and Lily a budding photographic artist.
Dr. Vanaman credits his successes to his mentors, Robert L. Hill, his graduate adviser at Duke University, and his post-doctoral mentor, George R. Stark, then at Stanford University. Later research successes resulted from the hard work of many dedicated students and fellows who worked in his laboratory throughout his professional career.
