His achievements have been honored with a number of accolades, including being listed as one of the Top 10 Construction Directors by Construction Business Review in 2023.
STATESVILLE, NC, November 05, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Tom G. Smith has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Drawing on 40 years of experience in the construction field, Mr. Smith now serves as the United States regional director of construction for Fluor Corporation. He originally joined the company in 1989 as a piping designer. Throughout his time with Fluor Corporation, Mr. Smith was promoted to construction engineer, area engineer, piping design supervisor, piping department manager, site mechanical engineer, corporate construction coordinator and construction manager before accepting his current role. His professional journey includes taking on such positions as site manager at Mustang Engineering Global Performance, construction director at Day & Zimmermann, and construction director at McDermott. Mr. Smith's career in construction began in 1984 as a craftsman for Daniel Construction, Davis Electric and other contractors.
Prior to shifting his focus to the construction field, Mr. Smith competed as a bareback bronc rider in rodeos. Inspired by his father, who worked in construction, he pursued that industry while recovering from an injury. Mr. Smith has continued enjoying rodeos in addition to his primary vocation, including participating in various organizations related to the hobby. He has contributed as a vice president of the Cowboy Artists and Photographers Society, the director of the Southern Extreme Bull Riding Association, a board member of the Professional Bucking Bull Association, the vice president of the National Bull Riders Association and a spokesman for the International Professional Rodeo Association. Most recently, Mr. Smith honored the legacy of this event as the director of the National Bareback Riding Hall of Fame. His commitment to continued involvement in rodeo showcases his ability to adapt and stay in touch with his roots while still finding success in his career journey.
Before venturing onto his vocational path, Mr. Smith established a solid foundation in the skills necessary for his progress. In 1990, he completed coursework in construction management and piping design at Greenville Technical College. Mr. Smith was supported in learning his new trade by his father and numerous mentors, especially the supervisors he worked with in his early years as a craftsman. He credits his success to the lessons he learned performing at rodeos, particularly how to keep calm in spite of fear and stress.
Among his career accomplishments, Mr. Smith is especially proud of the key part he played in building a power plant in Willis, Texas, in 2020. This project was finished six months ahead of schedule with no accidents or injuries. It stands as a prime example of Mr. Smith's passion for building great teams and leading them with wisdom and compassion. His achievements have been honored with a number of accolades, including being listed as one of the Top 10 Construction Directors by Construction Business Review in 2023. In 2024, Mr. Smith earned the Fluor Silver Cross for Lifesaving Actions.
Beyond his professional life, Mr. Smith is a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoys painting, leatherworking, writing poetry, working on his ranch and attending church. Though he has no immediate plans to retire, Mr. Smith is intent on passing on his knowledge to the next generation of leaders in the construction field. He hopes to become a strong mentor who can provide to others the same guidance he received when starting his career.
