SANTA CLARA, CA, November 07, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Onder Erin, Ph.D., has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Erin is a distinguished expert in the field of medical technology, with more than ten years of specialization in the development of miniature magnetic robots for minimally invasive surgeries. Dr. Erin's major accomplishment in his career is to transform MRI devices into a wireless robotic manipulation platform by enabling an MRI device to tele-operatively or autonomously control the position and orientation of magnetic capsules, allowing dual usage of an MRI device as imaging and robotic manipulations for minimally invasive surgeries.
Currently serving as a senior robotics and control engineer at Intuitive Surgical, Inc. he has dedicated his career to advancing robotic assistance in medical procedures. His work involves improvements in robotic autonomy, analyzing complex robotic motions, and developing feature implementations for current robotics systems.
Prior to his role at Intuitive Surgical Inc., he was a senior R&D robotics and control engineer at Johnson & Johnson. Dr. Erin was also an external consultant for Weinberg Medical Physics Inc. from 2021 to 2023, where he contributed his expertise in medical robotics to develop first-of-its-kind ultra-fast MRI and magnetic particle drivers. Concurrently, he served as a postdoctoral researcher at Johns Hopkins University, focusing on innovative applications of magnetic fields in surgical procedures. From 2017 until 2021, he was a scientific researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, where he made significant strides in intelligent systems and robotics.
Laying the foundation for Dr. Erin's groundbreaking work in medical robotics was his academic journey, which began with an undergraduate degree in engineering and natural sciences, focusing on mechatronics engineering, from Sabanci University in 2014, graduating as valedictorian. He then pursued a direct Ph.D. program at Carnegie Mellon University in mechanical and robotics engineering, graduating in 2020 with a 249-page long thesis titled "Wireless Actuation, Imaging, and Control of Magnetic Robots with Magnetic Resonance Imaging Devices."
During Dr. Erin's endeavors in higher education, he contributed as a research assistant in the NanoRobotics Lab at Carnegie Mellon University between 2014 and 2020, a graduate teaching assistant in 2015, and a summer research intern in 2013. He was also the co-founder and president of a student organization at Sabanci University from 2009 to 2014.
Throughout his career, Dr. Erin has been recognized for his contributions to the field. He holds a patent for "Apparatus and Method for Robotic Procedures with Magnetizable Tools," which he acquired in 2022, and he has co-authored several influential works, including "Towards 5-DoF Control of an Untethered Magnetic Millirobot via MRI Gradient Coils" and "Magnetic Resonance Imaging-System Driven Medical Robotics," both published in 2020. His work has demonstrated the feasibility of using magnetic fields for tissue suturing with robotic assistance, showcasing the potential for future applications of ultra-minimally invasive surgeries in hospital settings.
In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Erin is actively involved in various industry-related organizations, such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, and IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. He also serves as a career mentor for Braven and as an advisory board member for the Turkish Nobel Community. He is also a member of the Turkish American Professionals Directory (TAPD). His commitment to civic engagement is further exemplified by his roles as a science organization supervisor for Bursa Kültür A.Ş., a project manager for Türkiye Ulusal Ajansi, and a student team supervisor for the seventh Nanotechnology and Nano-science Conference.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Erin is passionate about advancing medical robotics and demonstrating the efficacy of robots in surgical settings. He aspires to lead pioneering research in the interdisciplinary realm of science and robotics, with a vision to integrate these technologies into daily life to enhance human experience and efficiency.
