Across nearly 15 years, Dr. Colon has built an impressive career in the fields of nanotechnology and biotechnology. As of 2024, he serves as a senior scientist in formulation and drug product development at Third Harmonic Bio. In this position, Dr. Colon manages projects on the development of new drugs and performs formulation and process development on the company's drug product operations. Prior to this, he held such roles as formulation development scientist at Seres Therapeutics, drug product development and formulation scientist at Assembly Biosciences Inc., and preformulation scientist at Celgene, which was acquired by Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. Dr. Colon contributed for five years as a graduate teaching assistant and laboratory instructor at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. His professional life started as a research assistant in pharmaceutical engineering and analytical chemistry at the Engineering Research Center for Structured Organic Particulate Systems in 2010, followed by a pharmaceutical commercialization technology internship with Merck & Co at the Las Piedras, Puerto Rico site.
Dr. Colon's performance in the field was born of his academic journey, starting with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus in 2013. Subsequently, he obtained a master's degree in chemical and biochemical engineering from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in 2016. Dr. Colon stayed at Rutgers to earn a PhD in chemical and biochemical engineering in 2019. Dr. Colon attributes his success to the support of his community, as well as his resilience and sense of purpose. He is driven by the desire to help lift his family out of poverty and has overcome significant adversity to achieve this.
As a commitment to his field, Dr. Colon has been active with several industry-related organizations. He has been a member of the Society for Advancing Chicanos, Hispanics and Native Americans in Science since 2016 and joined the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in 2010. Among his many professional achievements, Dr. Colon was granted a patent for the design of a self-decontaminating membrane with nanocatalyst systems for the protection against chemical warfare agents in 2015. He has helped author numerous articles in professional journals and also cherishes his time playing trumpet, French horn and guitar in marching band and chamber orchestra. While pursuing his PhD, Dr. Colon received the Teacher Assistant of the Year Award.
Known for his contributions as a civic-minded citizen, Dr. Colon has donated to the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. He remains devout in his faith as a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Dr. Colon has also participated in youth outreach and organizing food and clothing drives for the less fortunate in his community.
Outside of his career, Dr. Colon enjoys attending classical orquestra ensemble performances, painting, and playing the trumpet and guitar. He regularly plays music alongside his wife at wedding ceremonies and other events. Dr. Colon is also passionate about aviation and is working to get a private pilot license. Looking ahead, his ambitions include being promoted to a director and eventually becoming part of the chief executive leadership team for a biotech company. Dr. Colon hopes to be trusted to make major decisions for his company, with the goal of leading the company to greater success and having a positive impact on the lives of patients using the medicines he helps develop.
