Ms. Payne is a U.S. Navy veteran who joined the National University in San Diego to provide her military expertise on campus. Since 2023, she has been the Military and Veteran Strategic Partnership Manager. Her role involves developing and executing national initiatives for various military branches and overseeing third-party strategic relationships. With over a decade of experience in her profession, Ms. Payne has provided vision, intellectual leadership, coordination, strategic planning, and implementation of a system-wide framework to promote and grow military and veteran-affiliated strategic partnerships for the National University System.
Before her current position, Ms. Payne was the institution's Associate Director of Military Benefits Advising from 2022 to 2023. In this role, she guided military personnel through the complexities of educational benefits, ensuring they received the support needed to succeed academically. Between 2018 and 2022, Ms. Payne managed the Veteran Center at National University, providing essential services and support to veterans transitioning to academic life. Her earlier roles included working as an Admissions Counselor from 2015 to 2018 and as an Admissions Advisor between 2012 and 2015.
During her tenure, Ms. Payne also taught for a semester as an adjunct professor at California State University in San Marcos in 2022, where she shared her extensive knowledge with students. She began her career in education as a substitute and teaching assistant at Virginia Beach City Public Schools in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in 2009.
Ms. Payne's career is also marked by her service in the U.S. Navy as an Operations Specialist Petty Officer Second Class (OS2) in Charleston, South Carolina, from 1991 to 1995. Her military background has significantly influenced her professional journey, equipping her with the skills and dedication necessary for her current role.
In addition to her professional achievements, Ms. Payne is actively involved in industry and civic organizations. A member of the Virginia Advisory Council on Military Education since 2021, she is currently the vice president, elected in 2023. She is also active with SALUTE, the National Society of Leadership and Success, and Omega NU. Previously, Ms. Payne volunteered as the Advancement Chair of Troop 895 for the Boy Scouts of America from 2014 to 2021.
Ms. Payne's academic credentials include a bachelor's degree in Sociology with an emphasis in education from Ashford University (now The University of Arizona Global Campus) in 2011 and a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from National University in 2014. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education (EdD) in Organizational Innovation at National University.
In light of her success, Ms. Payne received the President's Player Award from National University in 2017. Her community initiatives also earned her recognition as the Volunteer of the Year for Troop 895 in Chula Vista, CA from the Boy Scouts of America in 2017. Ms. Payne attributes her success to her children, who motivate her to strive for excellence daily. She also credits her mother for instilling strong values and work ethic through immense sacrifices. Ms. Payne remains dedicated to advancing her career in higher education. She aspires to eventually become a dean, where she can become more influential in the field.
