Drawing upon more than 35 years of excellence and innovation as the founder of several medical device startups and the primary inventory of various life-saving technologies, Dr. Albert K. Chin has distinguished himself as the co-founder and chief innovative officer of four companies: Orare Medsystems Inc., FemDx Medsystems Inc., PercAssist Inc. and TAS Medical Inc. As the inventor of over 230 patented devices and having brought numerous products to market over the course of his professional journey, Dr. Chin is most proud to have contributed to advancements that have saved countless lives. Other companies he has helped launch include Saphena Medical, InnoVein, nVision Medical, Pavilion Medical Innovations and Cruzar Medsystems.
In addition to the various companies he has founded, Dr. Chin previously held the position of chief innovation officer at Pavilion Medical Innovations and Maquet Cardiovascular (formerly Boston Scientific Cardiac Surgery). He spent almost two decades as the vice president of research at Guidant Cardiac Surgery (formerly Origin Medsystems), where he distinguished himself with new designs to aid general surgery and cardiac surgery. Dr. Chin began his career in 1978 as a cardiovascular researcher working under Thomas J. Fogarty, MD, a renowned surgeon and medical device inventor who helped inspire Dr. Chin's journey.
Beyond his daily responsibilities at work, Dr. Chin has maintained his affiliation with a number of academic and industry-related organizations. He served on the advisory boards for the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Emory University Biomedical Engineering Department and has sat on the board for Vortex Medical Inc. Well-regarded as a thought leader in the medical technology profession, he has also shared his expertise in over 100 presentations at universities and conferences across the United States and in other countries. Moreover, Dr. Chin has written dozens of articles in such esteemed medical journals as Surgery, Surgical Forum, and Circulation, in addition to authoring chapters of books on surgery and medical technology.
Dr. Chin's success in his field was born from his academic background. After studying mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1975, he went on to attend Stanford University, where he attained a Master of Science in mechanical engineering in 1976. Dr. Chin subsequently received a Doctor of Medicine from the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine in 1983 and completed two years of residency training in surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1985.
In accounting for his success, Dr. Chin credits a commitment to continuous learning, as well as challenging himself to think about device design for at least 15 minutes every day until he taught his brain to begin generating those ideas naturally. His contributions have been recognized with many awards, including the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine Dean's Award for Research in 1983, the Stanford University Emerging Entrepreneurs in Biomedical Technology Ideals of Entrepreneurship Award in 2007, and the Boston Patent Law Association's Invented Here! Top Award in 2018.
