Telleen, PhD, research associate professor emerita with the University of Illinois at Chicago, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the Washington/Baltimore Edition of The Wall Street Journal, published on December 7, 2022.
Dr. Telleen enjoyed a fulfilling career in psychology and public health that spanned more than four decades, during which time she found success as an educator. Following her retirement in 2011, she was bestowed with the distinguished title of research associate professor emerita at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Since then, she has turned her attention primarily toward further research in the field, through which she continues to serve as a mentor, develop new projects with colleagues, and share her findings with her peers.
At the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration, Dr. Telleen completed summer coursework and interned at the Lutheran Deaconess Hospital in 1966. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Augustana College, in education, with a concentration in psychology, in 1968. Dr. Telleen continued her academic efforts at the University of Maryland, earning a Master of Education in 1969 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the department of human development in 1976.
Dr. Telleen became involved in the field at the University of Maryland, where she rose to become an assistant professor in the department of human development from 1976 to 1981. Moving to the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health in 1983 as an assistant professor, she held numerous roles during her 30 years as a research assistant professor and research associate professor, including as the director of research for the Midwest Latino Health Research, Training and Policy Center. She also served as the interim associate director for research at the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy and a project coordinator evaluator for undergraduate studies, among numerous professorial positions. Dr. Telleen became licensed to practice psychology in the state of Illinois in 1983 with a focus on academic research.
In her career-related endeavors, Dr. Telleen contributed extensively to her field, working as a lecturer for the Division of Human Development at DePaul University from 1982 to 1983. She also earned distinction in 1998 as a sponsor for Professor Oscar Solano-Foerero, a Fulbright scholar at the University of the Andes. Likewise, Dr. Telleen served as a mentor with the Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars and Fellows Program via the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1997 to 1999 and on the chancellor's committee on the status of women at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Well-regarded for her scholarly output, Dr. Telleen has contributed extensively to the wide corpus of research material in the field of psychology and public health maternal and child health, authoring more than 70 articles and serving as an editor and presenter on various subjects. To aid in these endeavors, she has received many grants, including from the Centers for Disease Control, the National Science Foundation and the NIH. Additionally, Dr. Telleen co-authored "The Transition from Welfare to Work: Processes, Challenges, and Outcomes." Published in 2002, the book is a comprehensive examination of welfare-to-work initiatives that followed legislative reforms in 1996.
