Dr. Nicklas, a distinguished expert in nutrition and public health, holds the title of distinguished emeritus professor at Baylor College of Medicine, where she was associated with the Department of Pediatrics and the Children's Nutrition Research Center until her retirement. Her career began when she was a sophomore in college. She spent a year rehabilitating severely malnourished children throughout Haiti. Drawing on more than 40 years in the profession, her career is marked by significant contributions to the field of nutrition, including over 350 scientific, peer-reviewed publications, 27 book chapters and nine monographs. Her expertise has been recognized nationally, as she served on the prestigious Dietary Guidelines for Americans committee, which convenes every five years to set national standards for public policy and nutrition. As one of the 13 members chosen to represent the United States, she played a crucial role in shaping these guidelines.
After receiving her doctoral degree at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in 1987, Dr. Nicklas served as the director of dietary studies for the Premier Bogalusa Heart Study and as a research associate professor at Tulane's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She then served as a professor and chair of the Department of Food and Nutrition in the College of Human Development and Education at North Dakota State University before joining Baylor College of Medicine as a tenured professor in 1999. Adjacent to her role at Baylor, she has served as a research professor and honorary research professor at Texas Women's University and as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health.
Dr. Nicklas also has a record of outstanding service to the nutrition community. Of more than 60 appointments held throughout her career, she considers her highest achievement to be her appointment to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. A firm believer in the "golden rule," Dr. Nicklas emphasizes the importance of kindness and attributes her success to the values instilled by her parents. Through determination and commitment to her goals, she has managed to overcome myriad challenges, including paying for her education, and she actively encourages others to pursue their dreams.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dr. Nicklas is actively involved in civic-minded organizations. She volunteers with feeding 400 homeless people daily, demonstrating her commitment to giving back to the community. Her dedication extends beyond her professional life; whether it's helping a person in need or showing compassion to an animal, she is always ready to lend a helping hand.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Dr. Nicklas enjoys cooking, traveling, exercising and reading. She actively practices religion as an important part of her life.
