As president of Wordslinger Marketing & PR since 2014, she has leveraged her expertise to engage with a diverse array of clients across various sectors, primarily serving nonprofit organizations in Sarasota and Manatee counties in Florida. Her typical services include public and media relations, writing and editing, strategic communications consulting, event promotions, branding/rebranding, and crisis communications. She also handles content marketing and assists with fundraising and awareness campaigns.
Prior to founding Wordslinger Marketing & PR, Kunkel served as director of marketing and communications at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County (2012-2014). Previous positions include director of development and marketing at Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida (2009-2012) and communications director at the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee (2003-2009).
Her professional journey began in journalism during the 1990s, culminating in her role as managing editor of the Weekly Planet from 1998 to 2001.
Kunkel's involvement across various sectors has enabled her to continually expand her knowledge and expertise, making her a respected and trusted figure in her field. Her dedication to advocating for social services, hunger relief, child welfare, LGBTQ+ rights, the arts, and workforce development further underscores her commitment to creating positive change within her community.
Serving as a foundation for her professional achievements, Kunkel earned a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies from Tufts University (Boston, Mass.) in 1991. Beyond her education, she attributes her success to her work ethic, intense curiosity, and a robust professional network that has inspired her to always strive for excellence.
Kunkel is actively involved with the Central West Coast chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA), serving as a board member since 2016. She earned her accreditation in public relations through the Universal Accreditation Board of the Public Relations Society of America in 2019 and was recently conferred with the rank of Certified Public Relations Counselor by FPRA in 2024.
Additionally, she is dedicated to civic work, providing pro bono services for Temple Emanu-El and other community-serving organizations. Kunkel notes that one of her greatest joys is being sought out by younger or less experienced practitioners seeking guidance as they lay the foundation for their careers, and that she is always pleased to support others through mentorship as well as referrals for projects that may not be a fit for her own agency.
Kunkel's contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including a Grand Golden Image Award from the FPRA in 2022 and multiple statewide Golden Image Awards as well as local Image Awards from the Central West Coast chapter of the FPRA. She was named Member of the Year by her chapter in 2017 and has earned numerous other honors over the course of her professional and volunteer efforts.
Outside of her professional life, Kunkel enjoys playing drums and singing in a Sarasota-based rock band, paddle boarding with her beloved manatees, and spending time with her family.
