POTOMAC, MD, November 15, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gerald E. Marti, MD, Ph.D. has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Marti has dedicated over 40 years to hematology, establishing himself as an expert in the discipline. He serves as a volunteer physician at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a role he has held since 2009. He also served in similar capacity in the Medicine Branch of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and in the Family Studies Section of the NCI. In this capacity, Dr. Marti has made significant contributions to clinical flow cytometry, particularly in the study of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). His research has provided valuable quantitative insights and demonstrated the ability to detect a monoclonal B cell lymphocytosis (MBL) in early CLL nearly a decade before clinical diagnosis. MBL has also been detected in some unaffected, first-degree relatives in kindred with familial CLL.
Before joining the NHLBI, Dr. Marti was a program physician at the NIH Clinical Center Hematology Service from 1982 to 1987. During this time, he was part of a team recognized with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Award for their groundbreaking work.
Dr. Marti's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and biology from Loras College. He then pursued a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry at Northwestern University, graduating in 1977. Following this, Dr. Marti completed an internal medicine residency at Northwestern University in 1980. In July of 1980, he began in the Public Health Service (PHS) and completed a hematology fellowship at the NIH. In 1987, Dr. Marti transferred to the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) where he established a flow cytometry and image analysis practice. In 2010, Commander Marti retired from the PHS and continued as a medical officer at the Center for Devices and Radiologic Health (CDRH), FDA until August 2019.
A career marked by his involvement in prestigious organizations, Dr. Marti has been influential with the International Clinical Cytometry Society, the International Society of Analytical Cytometry and the International Workshop on CLL, reflecting his commitment to advancing the field. In addition to his professional affiliations, he is actively engaged in civic activities. He volunteers and sponsors initiatives at his local church and serves as a physician reviewer for overdose fatalities in Montgomery County, Maryland.
Dr. Marti's contributions have been recognized with several awards, including the Wallace Coulter Foundation Award in 2012 and the NIH Clinical Center Award in 2019. The International Clinical Cytometry Society also honored him as a distinguished lecturer.
Although semi-retired, Dr. Marti aims to complete his work on the intellectual history of CLL by compiling oral histories from leaders in the field. He also plans to finish a paper on smudge cells found in CLL and contribute to image analysis research that could offer clinical benefits. Among other future endeavors, Dr. Marti remains involved in regulatory consulting on laboratory-developed tests (LDTs) amidst evolving Food and Drug Administration regulations and conducting oral histories for his church community.
