Eliane overcame the traumatic experience as a refugee by excelling in school. Her high school teachers named Eliane as most likely to succeed. After graduation, she earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an MBA in finance and marketing from Boston College.
After the tragic loss of their child, Rachel, to brain cancer, Eliane with her husband, Gary, founded the Rachel Molly Markoff Foundation to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. To date the foundation has made approximately $2.5 million in grants over the past 13 years. Research recipients have included Stanford Medical, Mt. Sinai, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Sloan Kettering and Dana Farber. In 2009, the foundation launched Art in Giving, an on-line gallery (www.artingiving.com), which sells a wide range of artwork by prominent artists to corporations. Just like brick and mortar galleries, the artists are paid 50% of sales proceeds, but unlike typical galleries, the artists donate the balance to the Rachel Molly Markoff Foundation which makes grants to support innovative pediatric cancer research.
Looking toward the future, Eliane wants to engage more corporations to partner with gallery Art in Giving. Life science companies such as Sanofi Genzyme, and Real estate companies such as BioMed Realty, Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc., and The Davis Companies have played a critical role in Art in Giving's success. Art in Giving's value proposition and business model resonate with life science real estate companies providing a unique intersection of science and art.
