He established the University of Nebraska's Buffett Early Childhood Institute, through which he created programs designed to close the gaps in education for vulnerable children and strengthen the early childhood workforce in the state. After 10 years as founding director and Richard D. Holand Presidential Chair, he obtained emeritus status in 2023, concluding a career spanning five decades and positioning himself as a transformative leader in early childhood development. Alongside his work with the University of Nebraska, Dr. Meisels holds emeritus status at Erikson Institute and the University of Michigan.
During the early stages of his career at the Buffett Institute, Dr. Meisels gained valuable expertise as co-chair of the Nebraska Early Childhood Workforce Commission, a group of 40 public- and private-sector leaders committed to expanding and strengthening the state's early childhood workforce. Similarly, he honed his educational expertise at the University of Michigan and Tufts University, where he served as director of the Eliot-Pearson Children's School and a senior adviser specializing in early childhood development at the Boston Children's Hospital Medical Center's Developmental Evaluation Clinic. Dr. Meisels published over 200 books, articles, assessments, and monographs throughout his career.
As an expert in his field, Dr. Meisels's commitment to staying abreast of changes in the field is unwavering. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from the University of Rochester, where he graduated with high honors in 1967. Subsequently, he expanded his professional knowledge by completing a Master of Education in philosophy from Harvard University and a Doctor of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Driven to stay current with changes in the field, Dr. Meisels aligned himself with Zero to Three, where he was president of the board of directors in 2006, and the National Academy of Sciences' Committee on Early Childhood Pedagogy.
Over his five-decade-long career, Dr. Meisels and his colleagues designed and conducted research on a developmental screening instrument to identify children from three to six years old who were at risk for learning and behavior problems. Likewise, he and his colleagues created and researched the Work Sampling System, an observational assessment for children from preschool through grade three, and published the Ounce Scale, an observational assessment for infants, toddlers, and families.
Given his professional achievements, Dr. Meisels has been honored many times, earning the Mary E. Switzer Distinguished Fellowship in Handicapped Research through the U.S. Department of Education, the Ferguson Award for Leadership in Early Childhood Education from National Louis University, and the Richmond-Coleman Award in Developmental Pediatrics from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Before obtaining emeritus status in 2023, he received the Simms/Mann Whole Child Award for Visionary Leadership in Early Childhood Development and Education and the Dr. Lavonne Plambeck Early Childhood Pioneer Award. While his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Meisels takes greatest pride in serving as acting dean of the School of Education at the University of Michigan, president of the Erikson Institute, and founding executive director of the Buffett Early Childhood Institute at the University of Nebraska.
Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, Dr. Meisels credits his success to the support of his family and to working directly with children as a preschool, kindergarten, and first grade teacher. He also notes that he would not be where he is today without the inspiration of his mentors, colleagues, and graduate students. Looking ahead, Dr. Meisels intends to continue to contribute to the growth and development of young children and their families.
