Dr. Rech is an accomplished assistant professor of chemistry at The University of North Carolina Asheville, where he has been teaching and conducting research since 2023. In this capacity, he is responsibe for leading a research team focused on developing new conjugated polymers for lightweight and flexible solar panels. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed scientific articles, which have already received over 2000 citations. Prior to his current role, Dr. Rech served as a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University in Prof. Zhenan Bao's research lab from 2021 to 2023, with financial support of the Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. He began his journey in academia as a graduate research student at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2016 to 2021 working in Prof. Wei You's research lab. During this time, he also collaborated extensively with the Organic and Carbon Electronics Laboratories at North Carolina State University.
Dr. Rech's motivation to become a professor centers on inspiring the next generation of scientists, a mission he has been working on for over a decade. Prior to starting at the University of North Carolina Asheville, he was an adjunct professor of chemistry at Durham Technical Community College. Both in the classroom and through various outreach events, Dr. Rech strives to creates excitement about STEM. These include many activities with organizations such as Letters to a Pre-Scientist, the American Chemical Society, the Material Research Society, Research Triangle Nanotechnology Network, the Electrochemistry Society, and more. You can also find him as head referee for the FIRST Robotics Competition.
Dr. Rech's educational background includes a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, completed in 2021. His graduate work was highlighted in the Excellence in Graduate Polymer Research Symposium at the American Chemical Society spring 2021 meeting and included special recognition on behalf of the ACS president. He also received a Bachelor of Science in chemical physics from Lewis University in 2016, with the highest Distinguished Scholar of the Scholars Academy honor.
Contemplating his professional life, Dr. Rech attributes his success to his unwavering determination and persistent approach instilled in him by his parents. He believes that steadfast dedication and relentless perseverance are key to achieving one's goals.
Outside of his career, Dr. Rech enjoys a variety of hobbies, including playing softball, tasting wines, working with robotics, collecting Star Wars Legos and hiking. Looking ahead in his professional life, he aims to establish a robust research team of undergraduate students at the University of North Carolina Asheville focused on developing cost-effective polymers for solar panel technology.
