Dr. Gustafson has made significant contributions to the field of geography and environmental consulting, with a career spanning six decades. Serving as the chief executive officer of Environmental Image Group Inc. since 1983, he has leveraged his expertise in aerial photography and geomorphology to provide specialized consulting services. His business focuses on assisting companies and law firms in disputes over the costs of cleaning up polluted industrial sites. This niche consulting work is primarily driven by word-of-mouth referrals, highlighting his reputation in the industry.
Concurrent with his entrepreneurial endeavors, Mr. Gustafson maintained a distinguished academic career. He served as a professor at James Madison University from 1978 to 2005, where he was instrumental in reshaping the geography program to meet modern demands by updating the curriculum and recruiting colleagues with expertise in Geographic Information Systems. Following his military service, Mr. Gustafson pursued higher education, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in quantitative analysis of landforms from aerial imagery from LMU München, completed in 1973, and a Master of Science in geomorphological mapping from aerial photography from the International Institute for Aerial Survey and Earth Sciences (Deift), obtained in 1971. Mr. Gustafson attributes his success to his blessings and hard work, the latter of which was inspired by experiencing the loss of his father at a young age.
