Ms. Small is a distinguished physical therapist who specializes in Trauma-Informed Pelvic Health physical therapy. She is the owner of New Perspective Pilates and Pelvic Health in Edina, Minnesota. At New Perspective, Denise supports the healing of chronic musculoskeletal pain and its roots in past traumatic experiences. Passionate about her work, Ms. Small is deeply committed to helping individuals regain agency over their bodies and improve their overall function.
New Perspective is a culmination of Denise's life's work. Her career began as a professional ballet dancer in 1997. At 17 years old, she received her GED and joined the Kansas City Ballet, where she danced as a member of the Corp de Ballet. Denise's ballet career spanned over 15 years, where she danced with other notable companies including the Pennsylvania Ballet, the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and The Metropolitan Opera in New York City. In addition, she was also a founding member of the New Chamber Ballet, also in New York City, which now is known around the world for its groundbreaking performances.
While preparing for retirement from the Ballet, Denise earned her certification to teach Pilates through Balanced Body University. Denise did the entirety of her training in New York City, where she studied with Masters in the field of Movement and Body Work, including Leslie Powell, Doris Pasteleur Hall, Irene Dowd, Thomas Myers, Eric Franklin, and Ellie Herman.
Ms. Small's transition into physical therapy was a natural evolution of her careers in dance and Pilates, further inspired by her passion for caring for others.
While building her academic resume for applications to physical therapy school, Denise studied psychology at the City College, part of the City University of New York. After 3 years, Denise was accepted to the State University of New York's Downstate Medical Center to earn her bachelor's in health science and subsequently her Doctorate in Physical Therapy. She received her degree and license to practice in 2016.
Immediately upon graduating, Denise entered the field of Pelvic Health physical therapy working for Beyond Basics physical therapy in New York City. There, she was mentored by physical therapists, medical doctors, mental health providers, and nutritionists, all of whom shed light on the multi-dimensional needs of those suffering from chronic pelvic pain.
In 2019, Denise moved to Minneapolis/St. Paul, where she continued to further her education by taking classes in pain science, cranial sacral therapy, and trauma informed care.
In addition to her professional achievements, Ms. Small is involved as a professional member of the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health (ISSWSH), reflecting her commitment to staying connected with industry advancements.
