    LAS VEGAS, NV, November 26, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joaquim Silva Tavares, MD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Tavares has established a distinguished career in the medical field, founding member of United Critical Care, the largest pulmonary and critical care group in Las Vegas, currently serving as an intensivist and the associate director of intensive care at Sunrise Hospital and Sunrise Children's Hospital, where he has practiced since 2010. In the outpatient setting, he cares for patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and sleep apnea. Prior to his current roles, he served Sunrise Hospital as ECMO medical director until June 2024, notably launching the first Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) program in the state of Nevada, a milestone he regards with great pride.

Previously, Dr. Tavares was director of pulmonary services at St. Rose Dominican Hospitals from 2009 to 2010, medical director of the Nevada Organ Donor Network from 2008 to 2011, and medical director of the Goldring Sleep Laboratory from 2000 to 2008. Beyond his patient and laboratory work, he contributed to academia as an associate professor of medicine in the intensive care unit at University Medical Center Southern Nevada from 2005 to 2012 and served as the university's assistant professor from 1999 to 2005 and subspeciality education coordinator of critical care from 2005 to 2007. Earlier in his career, he taught as a clinical instructor in sleep medicine for the State University of New York from 1997 to 1999.

Dr. Tavares's educational background laid a strong foundation for his career achievements. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa in Portugal before moving to the United States for further training. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Flushing Hospital Medical Center, followed by fellowships at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York Hospital, Cornell University, New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, and Stony Brook University Hospital. These experiences honed his skills in critical care, pulmonary and sleep medicine.

Dr. Tavares's professional journey is enriched by his active membership in several prestigious organizations. These include the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization, the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Thoracic Society, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and Ordem dos Médicos in Portugal.

Reflecting a commitment to excellence and continuous learning, Dr. Tavares holds board certifications in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care, and sleep medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Additionally, he has earned the European Diploma in intensive care from the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and an Elso-Adult Ecmo Certification from the Extra Corporeal Life Support Organization.

Dr. Tavares's dedication extends beyond his professional endeavors into civic engagement. He volunteers with Portuguese and Guinea-Bissau organizations, contributing to community welfare and cultural preservation. His contributions have been recognized with several awards, including a spot on the Castle Connolly List of Top Doctors in Pulmonary Medicine each year for the past decade. Other accolades have included the 2010 Dr. Joseph and Rae Brown Award for significantly advancing quality care for critically ill and injured patients from the Society of Critical Care Medicine and Teacher of the Year Award at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada from 2003 to 2007.

In his personal life, Dr. Tavares enjoys jogging and playing soccer as part of his leisure activities. He shares a fulfilling family life with his wife and their two children. Looking ahead, he aspires to return to Guinea-Bissau to assist those in need and aims, together with The Forum Chico Fos Team, to establish a digital library for physicians there, reflecting his enduring commitment to improving healthcare access globally.
