Before establishing himself in academia, he gained valuable industry knowledge as a structural engineer with Sargent & Lundy, where he worked on units one and two of the Marble Hill Nuclear Power Plant and conducted analysis and investigation of existing cable trays and cable tray hangers for the Clinton Nuclear Power Plant. During the early stages of his career, he worked in various engineering roles with Skidmore Owings & Merrill; Albery, Pullerits, Dickson and Associates; and B.H. Martin Consultants.
Dr. Ali's engineering career is marked by his vital contributions to several notable projects, books and publications. His involvement in the development of the 60-story Pacific Plaza Building in Los Angeles (unbuilt) and the 40-story Midwest Stock Exchange Center in Chicago, showcases his vast engineering knowledge and expertise. An expert in his field, Dr. Ali holds a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. Subsequently, he expanded his professional knowledge by completing a Master of Science in civil engineering and a PhD in the same discipline specializing in structural engineering at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Driven to stay abreast of changes in the field, he aligns himself with the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. Outside his professional endeavors and affiliations, Dr. Ali contributed to those less fortunate as founding president of the Bangladesh Environment and Flood Committee in America, an organization dedicated to addressing environmental and flood-related issues in Bangladesh and beyond that organized two international conferences.
Given his outstanding achievements, Dr. Ali has been honored many times, earning two Academic Excellence Awards from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and a Millennium Challenge Prize through the American Society of Civil Engineers.
