She further honed her dance education and writing expertise as a teacher with the Young Writer's Workshop, co-founder and co-director of Art! Art! Barking Dog Dance Company, and as a counselor with Kentucky's Governor's School for the Arts.
Ms. Slaughter's career is a testament to her versatility and talent. She served as the executive director of Sacred Heart School for the Arts and as an adjunct faculty member with Indiana University Southeast, Bellarmine University, and Jefferson Community and Technical College. Her diverse interests and dedication to continuous learning led her to complete a Master of Fine Arts in writing popular fiction from Seton Hill University. In 2004, she transitioned from dance to writing full-time, becoming a novelist of such works as "Missed Cue," "Deadly Setup," "It Should Have Been You," and "Leisha's Song," which was nominated for an Agatha Award and received the Imaginarium Award for Best Young Adult Novel.
Throughout her notable career, Ms. Slaughter has been selected to serve as a Young Adult Fiction panelist and author participant in the annual Kentucky Book Festival. Additionally, she has been a keynote speaker at Indiana University Southeast's Adjunct Faculty Scholars' Conference and authored more than 150 articles in newspapers and magazines such as the Ann Arbor News, Montgomery Parent, and Dance Magazine.
Driven to stay abreast of changes in the field, Ms. Slaughter has aligned herself with the Michigan Council for the Arts' Creative Artist Grant in Choreography, the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, the Mystery Writers of America, the Romance Writers of America, and Sisters in Crime, a writing organization dedicated to increasing equity and inclusion for women crime writers.
Ms. Slaughter's professional achievements are a testament to her talent and dedication. She has been honored many times, earning the Maincrest Media Book Award and an NYC Big Book Award for "Deadly Setup," a Silver Falchion Award and a Moonbeam Bronze Medal for "Leisha's Song," and a Silver Falchion Award nomination for "It Should Have Been You." While her career has been filled with highlights, she takes the most pride in reinventing herself after a long, successful dance career.
