Having begun his remarkable career at the Bank Administration Institute in the Greater Chicago area, Mr. Sullivan served as a consultant from 1987 to 1989. He then transitioned to The Northern Trust Company in Chicago, where he worked as a human resources officer in the compensation department between 1989 and 1995. During this period, Mr. Sullivan honed his corporate executive compensation skills.
In 1995, Mr. Sullivan was recruited to join Accenture, PLC (the former Andersen Consulting) in Chicago as a manager, where he continued to develop his expertise in compensation advisory services across their Americas team until 1998. He subsequently was recruited by Ernst & Young Global Limited, serving as a senior manager in Atlanta and Chicago from 1998 to 2005. At Ernst & Young, Mr. Sullivan worked extensively with public and private for-profit companies and also developed expertise advising large nonprofit health systems.
Mr. Sullivan's career advanced further when he was recruited to become a director at RSM US LLP, a national accounting and consulting firm. He served clients in the Greater Chicago area between 2005 and 2012. In this role, Mr. Sullivan advised the boards and management teams of private for-profit manufacturing, wholesale and distribution companies. He also provided advisory services to large nonprofit health systems and hospitals, professional membership associations, and the boards and management teams of national public charities.
In 2013, Mr. Sullivan was recruited to join Pearl Meyer & Partners as a managing director, working first in Houston and then in Chicago. He established and led Pearl Meyer's National Healthcare Practice during his tenure, aligning it with the industry's shift from service-focused to value-focused models. He applied executive compensation practices from for-profit businesses to sizeable nonprofit health care systems, developing executive remuneration programs that enabled multi-year performance pay based on long-term transformational achievements. This accomplishment stands as one of Mr. Sullivan's most significant contributions to his field.
After retiring from Pearl Meyer in 2023, Mr. Sullivan launched Dunboy & Associates, LLC. As a contract consultant and board advisor, Mr. Sullivan continues to offer valuable insights to board and committee chairs and chief executive officers of clients and others. He is also a member of the Private Directors Association and served on the Planning Committee to organize PDA's first national conference in Chicago in September 2024. Steve will serve on the PDA Certificate in Private Company Governance Task Force in 2025.
Mr. Sullivan's academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and biology from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1979, a Master of Arts in psychology from California State University in 1983 and is ABD toward a Doctor of Philosophy in industrial and organizational psychology at Illinois Institute of Technology.
Throughout his career, Mr. Sullivan has contributed significantly to industry literature. His articles on the alignment of board business strategy and executive remuneration, as well as the role of executive compensation in the transformation of business strategies in private businesses and in the health care industry and other critical topics have been published in The Corporate Board, NACD Directorship Magazine, Crain's, Trustee Magazine, Private Director Magazine, The Houston Business Journal and by Pearl Meyer & Partners, among others. Mr. Sullivan' most recent article was published by Pearl Meyer and titled 'The Top Five Issues Facing Compensation Committees'.
Mr. Sullivan is continuing his advisory work while serving on a number of boards of directors. He believes that wisdom comes with age and looks forward to contributing his expertise in the future.
