Prior to his current position, Mr. Best served as a specialist in natural resource management with the National Marine Fisheries Service from 2009 to 2014. During this time, he honed his skills in fisheries management and collaborative leadership. From 2006 to 2009, he was a restoration project manager at the Crooked River Watershed Council in Prineville, Oregon, where he managed watershed restoration projects and coordinated permits. Earlier roles include fish biologist for the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs from 2004 to 2006 and bull trout surveyor for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in 2004. He started his career as an environmental scientific aide with the California Department of Fish and Game from 2003 to 2004 and as a GIS supervisor with the California Conservation Corps from 2002 to 2003.
Mr. Best's academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in ethnobotany from Humboldt State University in 2000. Initially crafting his own major, he explored the medicinal potential of plants before transitioning into fisheries and watershed restoration. This academic foundation laid the groundwork for his subsequent roles with NOAA and ultimately led him to his current position with Upper Salinas.
In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Best is actively involved in civic organizations such as the Central Coast Community Energy Council and serves on the advisory council for natural resources management and environmental sciences. He volunteers at the Warm Springs Reservation and holds positions such as vice chair of the Climate Collaborative. His contributions have been recognized with awards including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Award and the Conservationist of the Year Award from the California Association of Resource Conservation Districts.
